JFC- Mark 5, I am not talking HP I am talking RPM and weight- geesh! The YS has a lot of oomph, but on a 6 lb plane how big of a disc are you oing to swing?

A Jett-1.20 has more power than the YS-60 but that does not equate to SPEED. Do you think I am an idiot? I have been doing this for 20+ years...

As an aside, the wheels down will make the airplane SLOWER not faster....

Hello,bob27s,I have to agree with you.The YS60 is one of the strongest 60's out there. They are also very dependable, too bad this engine is no longer available. Razor-RCU,do you really think that a jett50 has more power than a YS 60?You have got to be kidding! The jett50 is one great engine, but more power than a YS60, I dont think so.Unless you sprinkle a little pixie dust on jett 50,then it would be more powerfull than the OS90DF.
Razor is not all that far off base... but making a statement like that either way would require some qualification.

The SJ50 and SJ60L are quite powerful. The SJ-60LX even more so.
Replace the standard jett-stream muffler with a full size pipe, and there is more to be had.

(In fact, the SJ-60L and SJ-60LX have gained some favor with the SPA and BPA pattern organizations - replacing in some aircraft what were in the historical aircraft OS-FSR, Rossi, Webra and YS .61 engines. )

The engines are designed for different applications, and different RPM ranges.

If you went just by HP numbers calculated on a calibrated dyno, the SJ50 and YS60 engines might look pretty much equal.
But when you look at the rpm curve and where the HP is developed at, you see the divergence in application.

For speed, a smaller diameter prop is prefered, spinning at higher rpm (generalized). The SJ50 or SJ60 engines are better suited for that than the YS60 is. Keeping that prop disk area to a mimimum is a significant drag-reduction.

bob 27s, I have to agree with you,a small light 40 size patriot with a jett 60LX is probably the ideal combo.and this is what I would have used if I did not have my YS60.The preformance of my patriot with this engine is very good for a prop. powered airplane.I am getting similar speed spinning a 12 pitch prop. at 13,000 as my friend would in his patriot spinning an 8 pitch prop. at 18,000.I guess that prop. selection is just as important as the engine and airplane. You probably know more about this than all of us.Back to work on my next speed plane,it will be much faster than my patriot.

Since you guys are talking about all kinds of Patriots here, here I come with mine, xl 60/90 size still in the building process, it has been a few years since I build a balsa kit and had forgotten how much fun this building bussiness is , I'm also building another airplane all wood too at the same time but the Patriot has priority, it will fly in about a month ( I hope )

I got me two sets of laser cut servo covers ( actually the servos get screwed to them ) from Laser Design Services to change the position the servos are mounted in the wings, I had to build a new NG mount to fit my 20+ old spring air retracts using a pull/pull system, will be using a 16 oz fuel tank ( I happen to have that size at home ) and will like to mount it right over the CG, I saw on the last AMA magazing a new fuel pump that will allow me to instal the fuel tank any were I want ( sweet ) will sheet the wings 100%, and have a pair of BVM wheels with brakes that I pick up at a swapmeet some time ago, since I will be using air for the retracts then I could use it for the brakes also [8D] I will be using a ST 90 on the nose, about which prop to use first not sure at the moment it all depends on the final dry weight but to start I guest I can use a 12/8 and 11/8 I'm also getting one of those black Mcpipes.

what you guys think????

If you're using only pipe pressure it might not be enough. Not sure if the device seen in your pic is a pump driven by pipe pressure. (?)

In any case you could try a "header tank" or "hopper tank". There's no need for pumps. Do a search here on RCU & you will find the info needed.

Lets see a pic. I am going to start with an 11-6 or 11-8 with 20% fuel to get the RPM up.
