Default Aresti Speed Plane. Good and Bad. Flutter problems.

I'm coming to you guys becuase you are the speed experts. Do you think a Hanger 9 Aresti with a .61FX will break 100 mph? If so, do you think the airframe can handle the speed?

Thanks for reading my post,
-Bob George

Default Aresti Speed Plane?

My boss has one and it looks to make maybe 70, tops, with a 50SX. He's got it propped for aerobatics though and it has good vertical. The plane looks streamlined, but the frontal area is probably high.

Default I agree...

...I have one with a .60 FSR in it....which will outcrank
th FX. Haven't flown it yet. It might do 80, 90 tops
with the fat nose. The fuse is mostly hollow...and is
not the style you would want to push too fast.

If you wanted a Pattern-type that would break into
the "ton"....look at the Killer Kaos..... Nice and
streamlined....thin fuse. Maybe a T.H. .75 in the nose....
pretty darned fast.... The Killer uses a sidemount
engine, this is a Super Kaos....up-right with an O.S.
RF motor....it's fast.

Dave.

Default Aresti

I've been doing searches and doing a lot of reading on this airplane. There seems to be a lot of people flying them with .46FX engines and they say they are pretty fast. SEveral posts mentioned that it lands so nice eventhough the wings are so skinny... There were several posting about using a .61FX, but there was no flight information. I stumbled across one posing where a guy is flying his with a Webra .61 on a mini pipe and his was clocked at 127 or so.

I went ahead and ordered one. Once I get it in the air, I'll have to do a posting on the perfomance of the airplane/engine combo. I know my goal of 120 or so isn't an extreme speed by any means, but it sure will be faster then what I am flying now.

Thanks for all the inputs,
-Bob George

Dave?

Are there also planes out there you don't have???

Every time somebody asks about a particular plane, we get a "...here's mine..." post from you...

that plane that was clocked at 127 is mine! the engine set up is a tower hobbies 61bb no baffles in stock pipe,11*8apc,15% Omega, and flying with a 10mph wind.Remember to use really low rates when traveling at these speeds, and don't turn until you power down!
This is one amazing plane. I love it!I wouldn't suggest using the tower hobbies motor they tend to have a hard time idling and turning off.

Default Aresti Report

Sure, I'll let you know how it works out. The airplane should be here tomorrow or Saturday and I figure it will take me about two weeks to get it ready to fly. I am trying to decide if I should go inverted with the stock muffler or side mount the engine and use a Slimline pitts on it.

Thanks for your interest,
-Bob George

Default Aresti Speed Plane?

I don't fly that fast on a regular basis!I prefer to fly pattern and free style 3D.We had the wind and the gun so there ya go.There really is no sense in tearing up this plane for speed!there are other planes out there built for speed.I'd use them.I don't like to fly straight for longer than a take off or landing!!

Ain't that the truth! This one always get some air time when I'm at the field no matter which planes I load up and take with me.

Default Yo, Scott....

....If you snug that T.H. carb down against the o-ring.
and get it adjusted properly....it will perform....

....the T.H. carbs are very good....

Default Rossi .45

Rossi .45 with a mini-tuned pipe on 5% with a 10x6 APC works well. Most agree that I'm close to 100mph. Just before they tell me that my horizontal is going to snap. That rumor is still making the rounds. If you ask me it probably got started by a couple guys that didn't know how to trim the covering from the horizontal without scoring the balsa. Just my 2 cents. (Watch my stab buckle next weekend)

Default Aresti

My Aresti arrived Friday and I have looked it over pretty thoroughly now. I don't see any reason why this airplane shoud not be able to fly pretty fast. The wing area is about the same as a GP Mustang, but it is a thinner airfoil. (GP Mustangs routinely break 100mph)

I am going to buy a composite mount today and wiegh it with the .61FX and compare it to the .46FX with the H9 mount. Hopefully there won't be much a difference. I'll check each with the stock mufflers.

I glued on the ailerons and glued the wing halves together last night. I hope to mount the servos and control horns tonight and I'll be done with the wing.

Default Aresti Speed Plane?

I have one, but it needs repairs now I have a .61 Tower Hobbies BB ABC on it and it flies beautifully. Last weekend after a local jet together I flew it and someone must have turned on their transmitter... anyways it was a slow fly by at about 30 feet, stalled and hit the ground... need to fix fuse behind the wing now... But I would imagine that at full throttle after a small dive that I am around 100mph with it.

Default YS 63 pretty fast

I have one with a YS 63 in it. It screams pretty fast. One of the racers in our club has the same set up and uses it as a practice plane. He has been champ several times so he must know what he is talking about.

Default Aresti Speed Plane?

My 2cents.

Breaking 100mph is not very difficult. My clipped wing cub yes cub with a .61fx does 115mph(radared) all day long with a 12x6 prop and I have been flying it for 2 years. The trick seems to be trying to break 150mph. Their is some kind of weird physical thing that happens to most planes at that speed which makes it very hard to break. At that speed little things count for alot of drag.

The aresti with a .61fx should have no problem going over a 100mph and the .61fx is a great engine and very reliable. I say put it on and have fun. Even if you don't get ballistic speeds you will get out of site vertical performance for those fancy tricks.

To quote Tim the tool man "More Power" Arg!!! With enough power even a brick will fly.

Enjoy!

Default Sounds good!

Ditto! That is what I was thinking. My trainer was hitting 90-something on radar. As long as it hits over 100 I'll be happy. If it hits 120, I'll be really happy.

I have the wing done now and the old blind nuts removed from the firewall. Now I need to plug the holes and re-drill for the GP 40-70 mount...

Thanks again for the encouragement,
-Bob George

Default 102 with ys 63

Mine was clocked via radar the other day at 97 level and 102 in a slight dive. That was with a three blade 11x9 MA. I put a 13x7 on it today and it was noticibly faster. None the less it will never be an extreme speed plane nor was it designed as such.

FSR....and a 11-8 MAS....I'll eat it....

Default EDH

Nice lookin' set/up. Is that the pipe that comes with the Rossi 45??

I looked at Morris the other nite and always thought that the Rossi was a high dollar engine. The 45 was only 139,so wondering if I was lookin at the rite engine. They say they come with a pipe already tuned.

Is 139 bout rite for the 45 or did I get side tracked??

My Aresti has a Irvine 53. With a 11X5,it's a lot faster but can tell the engine doesn't like the pitch.Seems to be working hard..With a 11X7 the engine purs and you can hardly hear it running but it sure is SLOW.

I'm in to speed big/time and am wondering how the Rossi fits in this category.

Thanx Walt

Default Results....suprising....

....it was actually too fast to get a handle on....

The maiden flight was about as scary as you can get....
I barely got it back in one piece, the whole flight lasted
about 45 seconds....here's what happened.

I fired up the .60 FSR with that turbo pipe....and it was
really cranking....and it was loud....tached at 14K flat,
with an 11-8 (that's strong)....had to lean out the low end,
and got her sweet. I had set the elevator at a couple clicks
up so if it needed trimming....at least it was goin up.
(that was a mistake)

I had her set on low rates....pulled her out clear of the line
and turned into about a 10-15 mph headwind....gave about
1/2 throttle....it went straight, so I punched it....
(mistake #2)....just then, with a 30 foot roll-out, it took
off....and climbed too fast....at the count of three, it was at
100 feet....and coming back towards me inverted.... ,
and heading for the ground. I rolled it back up-right...but it
was rooling hard to the right as well....and climbing like heck
as it really picked up speed.

I got some down trim in it, but it was going like a bat out of
hell, and was rolling too hard to the right the faster it went.
I could'nt get her trimmed out....and it was getting too far
away....everytime I touched the aileron....it would flip
instantly too far, and I was afraid to yank it, cause I didn't
want it to snap into the ground.

I gave an instant too much left...and it flipped inverted, still
goin away from me....I pulled up, and it cleared the ground
by about 20 feet, and rolling to the right 90 degrees of bank.
I could see all the white stars on the bottom of the wing,
and my brain was starting to lock-up....my buddy said "give
left", and I got it back level, and then he yelled "throttle back".

I should have thought of that....but quite frankly I had my
hands (and brain) full just keeping it in the air.

So I chopped the throttle all the way, and hit the trim all the
way down as well to kill the beast....and just tried to get her
in. As it slowed down....it mellowed out, and I was able to
hold her steady....brought her across the field, made a
decent left turn....and landed downwind....(greased it)....
it was going about 50 when it touched down.

Just as it stopped rolling my back went out (from the
tension), and I handed the radio off to my Bud, and hit the
ground in pain....for about 5 minutes....

But other than that....it was pretty uneventful....
