I weighed a Demon airframe, OPS 65 with header and pipe and prop, tank, radio, the works, plus a half roll of Monokote. About 3.3 pounds. Add a half pound for reality and some judiciious reinforcement tactics, and it is a 485 sq in wing at about 4 pounds with over 3hp on tap. The one I was flying when you were over came out at 3.3 pounds, and can be floated in stupid slow - yesterday I finally got it totally flared within the limit of that field, I was at middle rate and 3/4 backstick (high is verboten territory.. yikes.. that's what I had on for the first launch). It started rocking gently and just plopped in like a leaf from a couple of feet. Hardly slid at all. So 4 pounds does not worry me a bit.

Sounds good! But I think I'll stick with the 60 LX for the next Demon, the Jett 60 LX engine is TINY for a 60, its smaller than my OS 46FX I think, I know it weighs less.

RE: DC/Juno F-20 Build Progress
Well I finally did all the finishing touches on the f-20 today, had to mount the 6 cell pack right in the tail cone to balance it. I ended up making a billet aluminum engine mount for the 60LX so a little more wieght in the front than a nylon one, but I'm a little more comfortable with it than the nylon, also had a little trouble figuring out where to put the RNV, so I ended up making a AL standoff on the back of the engine mount to bolt it too, it looks good there, and easy to adjust it.
I'm ready to fly it as soon as we roll our field and do the spring clean-up, set up safety fencing and such down there, beginning of April I hope.

I'm wondering if the 9x8 might not be enough diameter for this type of draggy airframe, the engine has only had one run on the bench with the 9x8, now I'm ready to fly it, would the 10x6 be a better choice for starters, or would this be too much prop for a new engine?

RE: DC/Juno F-20 Build Progress
Well I got 4 flights logged in on her today finally, what a beautiful flyer! It took off and with just a couple of clicks of left aileron trim it was almost hands off, in a straight line it does fly hands off, very smooth in the turns also, it seems to be balanced perfect with the batt. pack in the tail cone, comes in and lands nice and slow too with no bad stall characteristics.
The Jett 60lx runs awesome too...for these first flights I'm running a 9x7 apc at about 17000 ground peak rpm so its rich...but it still gets pretty warm, hope thats normal, it must be ok cause I'm still with the same glow plug.
This plane is not a screamer by no means yet, its still rich with a 9x7 prop and the gear down still for the first flights, once the engine breaks in more I'll start leaning her out a little more, trying some more aggressive props , and flying her with the gear up.
All in all I am very happy for a successful day.

And not too much carnage.
There were four Demons at the field that day, but only three in flying form - powered by respectively a Picco .45 DF, SJ .50, and an OS .77 VR-DF. My .15 prototype came along for show and tell but still no radio gear in it. But.. I picked up servos and an Rx last night so it's any time now.
Cool you finally flew the F-20!!! Congrats on the successful maiden. Mind you, you didn't fly it while we were there [&o] but I guess you're forgiven..

Was out flyin' her again this morning with a 9x8 prop and the needle cranked in a hair more (still a smoke trail), and did four more flights with the gear up.... well shes picking up speed now, I tell ya!
Its exiting to fly, highly recommended.
So far zero problems with the JETT 60LX....same glow plug still, after 10 flights, and she never quits on me, fantastic engine!

The SJ.50 is a solid performer, it just fires up up and does the same thing flight after flight, up in the 170 range on the right prop. And it throttles too. Just a great engine.
The Picco got in one fast flight, it's a few mph faster than the Jett for sure when it's on song. It had some exhaust system troubles after that.

Glad to hear you're tearin' it up out there! I imagine the 60LX can manhandle a 9x8 prop pretty good. It sounds like the engine / plane combo was made for each other.

Yes that 60LX seems to be a real monster. I think it might be kind of a waste on that airframe though, but fun anyways, good plane to break it in on.[8D]

Click on the camera view and pan around. All the trees to the right are gone now.
You have plenty of room to air it out.

RVman's .77, running rich with the pipe too long on a chunky trimmed wood Zinger 11-10 or 12-10 (not sure which) was hauling butt, it seemed a bit faster than my best flights to date so I would say it got up around 175-180 that day. The concensus was that there is a good bit more to come. The IMC servo packed it in after a couple of flights so that one ended early that day. Suffice to say it has enough power.. even hobbled by prop and pipe. Wait 'til he puts an 8.5x11 on it and sets up the pipe.. egads.
