Yes the motors will be pylon mounted. On this electric version Im mounting a left and a right with differentail thrust for turning.

Just read up on your progress. Your carftsmanship is fairly impressive! I've got build going on. I'm converting an old school outboard V hull; Only i'm thinking Hydro foils. So I've found your progress very interesting. I've concidered Gyros to stabilize my concept. But the whole topic high performance boats in RC has turned out to be rather captivating. I'm from The Airborn end of RC. Foamies, a helicopter, & I started with a SIG Kadet built from a pile of balsa. And, after reviewing your entire thread, my greatest fear for you is a high speed blowover [:@]. If the Japs:) got 100MPH out of a .46; Your talking about a ducted fan .91. Remember, that Japanese airboat is on some pretty solid looking pontoons & do they cut in & draft a little? also it has a long fuselage for axial stability. I am impressed with the cooperation i've seen in this forum. I hope you blow away the damn competition when you get this thing set up. You got me rooting for you! Anyway, I think I'm gonna go buy a fancy gyro or 2 for my high performance hydrofoil. I'll keeps tabs on your progress. Wild_Bill

Roll. The rear wing is in 3 parts, separated by the rear struts. The middle part is fixed, and the two outer parts, about 70mm of span each side, move in oposition for foll control. A pendulum angle sensor is used for slow roll control, with a gyroscope for fast roll control. These control a fast servo motor which moves the outer wing parts. There is also an input from the rudder, to alter the angle as a turn is started. This seems to work well, but there were a lot of bits to get working.

Everythings in the research stage now. Previous rc hydrofoils utilized 2 different gyro systems. One for bow to stern attitude control, the other for port and starboard. What i've got right now is a 10 yr old 2 channel am V-hull outboard nitro. Runs like a top! But, it's no hydro foil. I'm going to emulate the "dynafoil" waterbike design with inline vertical foils, the best design i could come up with. But i'm not on a contest time table; so don't expect any amazing footage off the cuff. A lot of designs seem to over do the wing area of the foils, therefore a lot of them are kinda slow. "Dyna foil" seems to get the dimensions & scale about right.
Anyway, about your project, at 100MPH You have to concider that your "boat" is going to behave a lot more like an airplane than a watercraft. The big idea is making your boat "fly" on the water or just skimming the surface. The latter is perffererable. Aerodynamics & Center of Gravity are primary concerns of any type of aircraft. But, i'm not one to preach. I think you need somebody who's well read on aerodynamics. anyway, thats my two cents for the day.[8D]
As far as power goes, I'm going to try to stick with the motor I have attached to the boat. Perhaps I can use the gyro to do some mixxing with the rudder control. It's a .40 i'm guessing, I'm not sure about rc Boat Motor makes. Anyway whole engine pivots at fire wall rudder & all. It runns on 60% nitro. green hull. I'll try to get a picture posted.

Is that horizontal tail on the elec. job fixed? (I mean, do the rules allow a moveable trimming device?) It looks like it's adjustable, but not controlled by a servo.
We were talking about gyros, and moveable "elevators" but that would be moot, if the rules didn't allow such devices, aye!?

Very cool!!! That looks like a lot of fun! I made some skis for one of my planes and tooled around the local park in the snow a few years back. There were too many trees in the park to safly fly, but I enjoyed slaloming between the trees caught some air for short distances going over bumps.

Hey Hooty that is very cool!! How far have you come on the NITRO Rigger??? I am getting into the helicopters right now and still thinking about building a Airboat, due to the fact that I live near a hundred lakes. How are you liking the snow and all of the winter experience as a whole??

Just out of curiousity, those tubes that hold the outriggers in place are pretty draggy. Would it make sense to either encapsulate them in some sore of airfoil shape? also, they could be adjustable to help trim the boat on step??

Slowly but surely making progress. Winter isnt to bad just waiting for the spring thaw.

I thought of adding a trailing edge to them, do you think that would help? They will be adjustable by adding shims under the tubes, still need to slot the holes.

Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a round tube or wire strut has about 3 or 4 times the drag as a streamlined strut of the same thickness? I think you need something like a 4:1 aspect ratio though? So...a 1/4" thick strut would need to be 1" wide. (approx.)

There is an airfoil shaped Alum. strut tubing available, but I don't recall who makes it? K&S maybe? Or you could use Carbon fiber?

Years ago, I made some really strong, yet light struts with the thin wall Alum. airfoil tube with a Carbon fiber tube reinforcment inside it.
