And to take it one step farther, the AMA really does nothing with a club's flying site beyond providing a certificate of insurance for the field owner if requested and paid for by the club. The AMA does not inspect, approve, or have any oversight of a field. There are suggested field layouts, but clubs are under no requirement to use them.

There are other liability insurance alternatives. There are lots of organizations in the US that have liability coverage through insurance companies directly. I'm not sure if it's cheaper or better, but it is available. A flying club/site does not have to be AMA chartered to exist or to have insurance.

We have a small group of guys that fly at a field we believe is owned either by the city or the school district. We have been using it as a flying site for over a year, mostly on Sundays and the majority of us are AMA members. There are buildings that are owned by the school district and are being flown over and a county road that is also being flown over. Local police nor school officials seem to have no problem with us being there and we get a lot of currious people coming by and watching the show.
My question is, if anything is to ever happen, which there have been a few close calls, does the AMA insurance cover anything. I have asked this a few times and received mixed answers. Someone suggested my homeowners insurance will cover something.....[sm=confused.gif] I have suggested that we form a club, but most of the guys have a bad taste in their mouth from the last club they were involved in and there is no interest in becoming organized at this field.
I really enjoy the company of the fellow flyers at this site, but am I risking to much flying there?

The situation that you describe was and is the norm for many small communities. There is plenty of legal precdence. You are covered.

I used to fly at a field that was union property. We flew control line on one part, boaters ran model boats on the lake, and outlaw RC guys would barbecue, drink, run cars on the parking lot, and fly junker airplanes. Things had organized themselves such that the activities did not conflict and I never felt endangered by drunken RC fliers. These guys were AMA members. They would go to the AMA field in the morning, fly, and have donuts and coffee. Then come over to the outlaw field to drink and fly. The union people were glad to have us as our being there had cut way back on their problems with vandalism.
