Beautiful, but same old question? What colour scheme is on the bottom?

The fuselange, etc, are black on the underside, the wings red, tail as well.
That is the original colorscheme that Hanno used. And I think it was even mentioned on the original MK plan.

It may have been mentioned on the original MK plans, but it I believe no one has seen a photo of it. I never have. I guessed the black on the fuselage, but would never of suspected red on the wings and tail.

Welp, I can see if I can post a pic of the wing, the fuselange is already packed ( moving ).
The pic of the wing won't be nice, as it suffered from a serious crash.
I'll post more pics if the .60 arrives.

Love the thread and love the plane. This one should be ok for senior pattern as it's fixed gear, standard muffler but it does have a 62 in it.

If anyones cares to guess the wingspan or %, engine and age of the plane I'll make a longer clip available. So for all the old timers out there, turn up the sound and your hearing aids (no disrespect ), but you won't need your glasses to fly it.

looking to the scale between wing and fuse, I would say .60 size , wingspan 1600-1650mm
What kind of engine ? doesn't seem to go high in rpm.....

I'm a proud 20/40/60 owner, while the 60 is slightly to long

I have a picture of the bottom of the plane Hanno flew at the 1977 pattern world championships in Springfield Ohio, but unfortunately my home pc is down right now and I can't scan it to show you. The first picture that John Mee has in his posting (I'm attaching it here as well) is the same color scheme Hanno had in 1977 when I saw him except the black on the top of the wing was a sort of lime green color. The entire bottom was painted this green color except for 3 stripes about 1 1/2" wide each going from the wheel well out close to the tip. The stripes were yellow, red, and white, in that order, from front to back. Same for the horizontal stab.
Besides having the honor of watching him fly, which he did extremely well, I also got to meet Hanno that weekend at the Museum at Wright-Patterson Airforce base. My friends and I walked in and directly in front of us were Hanno and I believe his dad. Dave Brown was there as well. They were all very cordial and signed autographs for us, and I got to shake Hanno's hand. I was hoping some of his skill would rub off, but alas it didn't!!!

That photo is a prime example of how the actual models that were flown were continually tweaked and modified for competition. Compare the elevator TE in the photo to the published plans below.

On my plan, it's like on the photo, but my plan is an Mk original !
It seems major tweaking made Hanno change the name, as we see with the 'Magic', shich has thinner wings for example.

The scale is a bit hard to figure out from the clip but it's 2,540mm span, Zenoah G-62 and it will have it's 15th Birthday in February. I loved my "little" one so much with the ASP .75 (built 1990) which I just fitted a Perry pump to yesterday and flew this morning that we decided to make a bigger one.

Talk about BIG maneuvers! Very Nice. I notice you built it with the brakes and flaps. Do they slow it down on landing a lot?

Ok, finally got my home pc fixed and was able to scan my pics from the 1977 pattern championships in Springfield Ohio that Hanno won.

The pics, going from top to bottom, left to right are:

-Rhett Miller with one of his planes

-Dave Browns Phoenix 7 and I think Sally in the window of the trailer

-Hanno's Transport case for his planes

-Hanno and Curare on flight line

-Hanno's dad and Curare after flight

-Hanno and dad cleaning bottom of Curare after flight

Hope you enjoy them. This is about the only pic of the bottom of his planes I've seen.

Gee thanks for the pictures. I would never have guessed the bottom of the Curare was painted as shown. Quite a contrast to the top paint scheme.

you're right, i looked twice (or more) to make sure it's the same plane! VERY primitive compared to the top

Most of the guys back then(and some today) would make the bottom of the plane a sharp contrast to the top. This would provide a strong visual reference as to what attitude the aircraft was in.

I tried to enlarge the scan of the picture some to get a better view, but this is about as good as it's going to get. Too bad we didn't have digital cameras back then.

Original Color Scheme

Back then paints were usually made by crushing nuts, minerals or various vegetable matter between stones and mixing with a slurry of animal fats and/or dung. Strips of animal flesh could be used as masking tape and the paint was blown from the mouth to finish the job.

Of course, transmitters were chiseled from stone and used finely carved wooden stick assemblies.

I was just looking at the plans from my MK Curare and there is no mention of the underside color scheme or any pictures. I did my fuse black with the wing and stab orange.

Well, I'm just glad that I was patient enough that day to get a shot of the underside of it since no one else seems to have a pic from that angle, and I've never seen any published pics of the bottom before. I was only 19 at the time and really wanted to build a Curare back then ( I never did get around to it then but I am going to be building one this year some time.).
I did get a shot of Hanno and his dad holding the plane, but it's in a collage frame with a bunch of other pics and wouldn't be easy to scan, but I can if anyone would like to see it. I also got a fuzzy pic of the Curare landing with a beautiful nose high attitude, but it's really small. I can scan that too if anyone wants to see it.

Okay, which set of plans are the most accurate to build one from? Most of the plans I've seen have the trailing edges on the wing and horizontal stab cut in a straight line and not tapered towards the front like most pics I've seen of his Cuare's, including the ones I have pictures of?

The RCM&E plans show the original 1975 Curare and seem to be very close the the pictures of the time. Alternate wing construction shown too, built up or foam. And it has the proper angled trailing edges at the tips. I will find the plan number if required.
