Best way to cut foam without a hot wire?
I need to replace the front of my bird so I've got a replacement section coming but I only need the front 5 inches or so of it. So I'm going to cut the old part out and epoxy a new front section in. I'm looking for the best way to cut the foam without having foam balls everywhere. I've heard of using a hotwire set up but thats just way to expensive for a one time project. I just need to make two straight cuts.

For years now I have used my wife's electric carving knife. It will go thru foam like butter and leaves a fairly clean cut. If you are going to continue to work with foam it is well worth it to have one of your own.

first of all, a fresh blade makes a world of difference. get a pack of 100 at office supply store and don't ever hesitate to throw one away : )
i use x-acto #11, single-edge straight razor (eg Treet brand), and occasionally a scalpel blade (pharmacy / home-patient stores).

For small parts, craft stores sell small, hot wire cutters for less than $10.00. It's about the size of a flashlight and works on 2 D cells.
