If I remember correctly, in the RCU of old, you used to have context sensitive help boxes pop up on the smiley icons next to the new post text box. The current selection I believe is slightly different from the original selection, and although you can guess at the proper meaning for each smiley, it's not always obvious.
The main anomoly however, is the standard smiley. It displays as a face with a tongue sticking out but is coded as a standard smile i.e. . I have seen people use a standard smile icon, but this doesn't seem to be available from the RCU selections.....
Edit: Intriguing.... just leave out the square brackets and it translates it into an icon.....
