Link to RCU's competition

Take a look at this post of mine:
[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=1788524&tostyle=tm]WWII SCALE VIDEOS!!!!! WOULD YOU LIKE TO HOST EM???? (Post No. 4)[/link]
What is RCU's stand on its users posting links to one of the competitions site?
Is it totally okay?
Is it frowned upon?
Will the post be deleted?
Will you revoke my RCU privileges?
Just curious.

You might want to take a look at this thread.

The answer to your question is in there. This is it in part.

The only type of linking (besides porn and spam, of course) that will not be allowed on our site is when members solicit people to leave our site for a competing service. That's just common sense. We won't allow people to use our site to promote a competing service any more than a brick-and-mortar store would allow his competitor to paste flyer's all over his walls. However, people are always welcome to link to any online resource, whether it's on our site or any other site, in order to share useful information with fellow members.

At 3000+ members I don't know if I'd call them competition but having choices will make all the sites strive to be better. If I were Marc I would not allow links to other sites. I think a fair analogy would be a hobby store allowing another store to put their business card on a bulletin board, not smart business.

We generally don't allow it unless the link is direct and in context to an ongoing discussion. No links to homepages of competitive sites. If we allowed that every tom, dick and let's not forget harry would come here and start threads "hey look at my new forum site, blah blah blah...". Not constructive.
However links to real relevant sources outside of RCU are permitted and always have been and this includes say a link to a specific thread or post somewhere else or whatever.

Juice,
As far as the one you linked to that one we may not allow for other reasons. the owner of that board hacked into RCU 3 years ago so I won't allow the promotion of his site in any way, shape or form.

Marc - Do you have a list of sites that are banned from RCU? Otherwise, how do we know? Juice's point is a good one, people in the warbirds section belong to many different forums that cater to our needs for scale and research. If one of these forum operator's harmed you or another member in some way, we would like to know. However, we commend for allowing us to be able to link between these forums as long as we are not soliciting the services of the forum or telling members to switch from RCU to that forum.

Scott,
that list is a pretty short one. it's unlikely you will run into any of them often. right now there are 2 sites. both aircraft related. rcf and since it is blocked i'll just say it rhymes with porkroll.
we actually even promote relevant sites such as rcwarbirds.com as you know. If you notice at the top of the warbird section I have a link directly to that site. Paul is a good guy and runs a good warbird site so I link out to it. He links back to us and it's all good.

Wow. My first deleted post! That's what I thought would happen. But I didn't know for sure, that's why I asked the question here. That's was the first time I read RCU's Community Policies. It's all common sense though.

I figured I would do the honors
No big deal. I do appreciate you asking in here so we could better clarify the rules for both you and other members who may not be familiar. Let's face it...who reads the rules anyway? Most find out a rule exists after a moderator tells them its a rule. I've done the same a few years back on other forums because I didn't know (until a mod straightened me out!)marc

BTW, while I am here.
Where did the official threads for the Evader, Rustler and XXX-nt go? There is a TON of information lost without those.

As far as the evader, rustler and xxx-nt threads I will look into that. I do know the RS4 thread was blown away and we are working on restoring that one. If you have a link anywhere to the ones you mentioned above even if it doesn't work that would help me track them down. Or if you know the exact thread titles. I don't know what happened. It is either a software glitch, a moderator moved or deleted them by mistake or there was/is a rogue moderator who intentionally blew the big threads away. The only one I knew about so far was the RS4 but if there are more I need to know about it.

I unfortunately have no links. As they are "gone" so has the post count of the users involved decreased. Also, I do not think I remember the exact names, but there are others in the ST forum that do. Sorry.

I think I can find them. We will try sometime over the next couple days to get them restored. It is a bit complex so I'm bringing in a programmer to attempt it.
I don't think the post counts were affected but I could be wrong.

I think we will be able to recover them all. I just devised a backup plan which can reinsert the data into new thread id's if necessary. the easy plan consists of just reinserting all missing threads/posts into their old message id's. The only thing may be that members might have to resubscribe to the notifies.

i think the nt thread was called Official xxx-nt thread!!!!! . im not quite sure if that is the right number of !'s or not, hope that helps though. also what happened to nitroaddict? hes been gone for quite some time now. last i heard he was moving and would be back soon, but soon is turning to in a long time.

I have a full list of the missing threads and will be restoring them this week. Nitroaddict should be back in the not too distant future from what I understand. We do miss him!
