I checked the appropriate boxes in "my account" but when I post, the PM icon does not appear below my post. Is that because I am looking at my own post (I doubt it) or what??

You figured it out.

Not much need to PM yourself, so the PM button is not visible on your own posts. Other members can see it.

The email, block and address buttons should be missing from your posts also.
