Is it just me or what. When I'm in the forums and open up a thread 50% of the time my computer locks up and the only way to get it started again is to shut down and restart the whole computer. This is the only site on the Internet where I have this problem ??????

Mine locks up, too, especially when I try to navigate around in a thread, such as enlarging photos. I don't have to restart my computer, though, I do have to go to Task Manager and close RCU. Then I can reopen it and start over if I haven't gotten too p-ed off by that time. This can be a little frustrating. BTW, my operating system is Windows 2000 Pro. Never had a problem before the most recent updating of the site.... Dzl

Marc,
Same problem here.
Sometimes the Site loads normally i.e. within a second or so. Many other times it locks up especially when downloading photographs (attachments). Often the only cure is to shut down my browser via Task Manager but ocassionally I need to restart the whole computer. I have tried to discern a pattern to when it locks up but without success. The lock ups appear to be random. One minute it can be working normally and the next it can lock up on the same Forum.
Was happening with Vista/IE7 but the problem is just as bad with Vista/IE8.
In common with other users, this is the only site that I visit regularly that has this problem.
Have updated video and other drivers all to no avail. Have also tried turning my Anti Virus and Windows Defender off and on but same result.
Would be most grateful if you would investigate. Navigating the site is becoming a real pain.
Many thanks.
Bob
PS: To be fair, the Site does seem to work better with Windows XP. However a modern site should also be compatible with Vista.

I know windows 2000 can create all sorts of issues on our site and we do not test for win2k since it is < .001% of our user base. We just can't develop for that and are soon dropping IE6 just like many major sites are dropping support.
Wasson - your issue sounds like network route more then anything. next time can you do a traceroute to our site. also if it is forum photos loading slow you need to right click on them and copy the link path. then do a traceroute on that. we use limelight networks CDN to show all our photos. this should actually speed up their display. However if it is a new thread or one that is not in their cache a first time hit can lag becaues they must pull from our origin then send to your local server where you pick it up from. that is one small inefficiency of using CDN's for content distribution

Marc,
It would appear that some changes have recently been made to the Forum including a useful facility for users to click on a separate slide show relating to each post.
I hope I am not speaking too early, but this does seem to have speeded up loading times on the Forum.
In addition, I have not had any locks ups since this change was introduced.
If the new changes are responsible - thanks!

that is good news. the slideshow should not affect general page loading. we had some other small code changes on certain pages recently which I would not have thought would help the lockup issue but who knows...maybe they did!
