Radio stopped working....again.
Hi there,
Perhaps someone on here can help explain my problem, or point me in the right direction.
A week or more ago I was setting up a new plane. Whist busy with the flaps, the radio went dead. When I say dead, the Tx was still switched on, but there was no response to the servo's. The PowerBox Sensor switch was also still on. Unfortunately the Rx was buried away inside the model so I could not see if it was still on. I switched the Sensor switch off and back on, but still the servo's were dead quite and no response to any Tx inputs. Then I switched both the Sensor switch and the Tx off and back on - everything was fine.
Since this happening I have been trying to replicate the problem, without being able to. I have used the Tx on a number of different models, I have used the same Rx, Sensor Switch, batteries and servo's to fly in a plane - without problem. No matter how long I left it all switched on, or tried to fiddle around - nothing happened again. I then decided to use all the equipment in the original model and test it again. No problem, I then flew the model for it's maiden flight successfully with no problem.
BUT TODAY, when I wanted to fly the same model for the second time it happened again. However, I managed to find today that the Rx was not showing a green light, in fact I was no showing any light. Without switching the Sensor switch or the Tx off, I touched the Rx and it came back on. Then after a while it went off again, this time it would not come back on again - the Tx and the Sensor switch were both still on, but not the Rx. Unfortunately, being at the field I did not have another Sensor switch or Rx to swap over, so I decided to pack up and take the plane home. During the dismantling of the plane I touched the one flap servo and it was extremely hot, but not the other one. This has now made me extremely suspicious of that servo. The flaps are not binding in the up position and therefor should not be the cause of the servo overheating, but perhaps it is possible that the servo is faulty.
FYI, I am using a Futaba 18MZ, Futaba 14 ch Rx, PowerBox Sensor switch, 2 x 2600 Li-ion battery packs, mostly JR8411 servo's, except JR8911's on the flaps. Also some electronic air valves and a light controller - together with a turbine ECU. All 14 channels are being utilised.

Not an expert. But I do have an associates degree in Electronic Tech. (If that means anything lol)
I have a rule. New plane new rx.
Anyway, it sounds like the rx has become intermmintent. About 4 years ago I had a 72mhz rx that was basically doing the same thing. I would check it before I left home and it was fine. When I got to the field it was dead. After the second incident. I retired the rx to a self with several knots in the antenna. (So I wouldn't use it again.)
Later I pulled it down to test some servos. It worked fine........the next morning I switched it on....dead. later that day I tried it again it worked.
The temp. Was 15 degrees warmer in my hobby room. Don't know if the temp was the actual problem. But it seemed to have an effect. Shortly after I went to 2.4. And didn't test any further.
At any rate with all the equipment you are running. I would change the rx. And test,and test,and test lol.

As soon as you start using a mix of Futaba and non-Futaba equipment, many things go out the window. If the receiver works normally when connected directly to a good battery pack, and you have good servos, then the problem is in other equipment. You mentioned that the receiver didn't work until you touched it, and then it worked. That indicates a problem with the receiver. Also, you mentioned a servo getting very hot. There's some kind of problem right there, too. A hot servo has either a bad amplifier, a bad motor, or is having problems with a bad linkage that's overloading it. You'll have to go through everything to confirm exactly where the difficulty lies.

Does this indicate that I can't use HT servos with all other equipment being Futaba?
Confused.
It could be what I get for trying to save a little money.
By the way I have been using Futaba equipment since 1982 and the old gold metal case G series and originally a 4 ch. system.
Last month I bought 2 HT analog servos to use in a sailplane wing for spoilers. Now I wonder if I should not use them.
Tx most likely an FM 6EX, maybe a 4EX both FM
Rx - number - FP - 168DF
w/ 4 servos - 2 ea Futaba # 3004 and 2 ea HT HS-422.
Rx Battery is the NR 4QB 600 mAh 4.8V

Most non-Futaba equipment plays 'nice" with Futaba equipment. Modern servos usually work just fine. The only way to know, though, is to try the new equipment and see if they work.
Basically, Futaba cannot give any assurances that non-Futaba equipment will be compatible. It is up to the maker of the non-Futaba equipment to ensure compatibility.
