Range Check Question
I have a Futaba 8 channel PCM receiver that I just received from repair services for a receiver that was replaced under warranty. I have a Futaba 9c radio. I have a hanger 9 extra 260. I have seen that when I install this receiver with the antenna installed in the supplied antenna tube, I cannot go past about 30 feet and the control surfaces lock up until I step back a few steps toward the plane. However, if I install the receiver with the antenna run on the outside of the fuselage, I can go well past 100 feet with positive control. Is this receiver suspect? Or could there be another cause? I am fairly certain that the radio is working correctly as I am using my radio with other airplanes that use PPM receivers and have not had any range issues.

RE: Range Check Question
If you get a good range check when the receiver antenna is routed outside of the model, but a bad range check when the receiver's inside the model, the problem is in the model and the associated wiring, pushrod routing, covering, and anything else that's part of the model. If there are long metal pushrods, they can cause interference. Long servo wires, carbon fiber in the structure, and so forth.
When you route the antenna outside of the model, you get it away from those influences. However, if you were to set the model on a stand with the receiver antenna routed outside of the model, and rotated the fuselag so that it was between the receiver antenna and the transmitter, you may find that range becomes a difficulty again. This would prove that the structure needs investigation.
