Default BME engine mount

What size ( and brand) engine mount do I use for my BME 50cc engine to install on a Midwest Extra 300?

Just bolt it to the firewall, been flying my 3.7 twin for a year that way. Just make sure that the low end is set correct or ir will shake like heck..

It doesn'thave a radial mount or rear bolt holes. It needs a mount like you would mount a typical 60.

Default H9 Mount

Skip, Hangar 9 has an alloy mount they supply in their 1/4 scale ARF's. It works perfectly for the BME 44 and 50. It is not the lightest mount available but is very rigid and easy to use. They sell it individually. If you have a hard time finding it I can look up the p/n for you. I am using this mount on my BME 44 and 50 and am very happy with it. cbk

the great planes 1.20 size mount is plenty strong - you have to cut it a bit to make it wider so the 50 can fit - its also the lightest way i know of to mount that motor

This link is from another one of our users, I'm not quite sure who's plane, but thanks to whoever took the pic..It's a real nice illustration of exactly how to do it. I did mine just like this, and it seems like a very clean and lightweight set-up.

Inexpensive as well. It's the GreatPlanes 60-120 adjustable mount. I epoxied the mount together, then split it, cutting away the steering bearing and cleaning up the backside,as there is molded lettering that won't allow it to mount totally flush with firewall. If you use this you'll see what I mean.

Are you putting tank on CG? I'm also about 3/4 done with my Extra, w/BME50. This should work well, I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

I have a whole book of notes on this plane I've taken from all sites, if there's any tricks I missed, or any that you might want, PM me and we can talk. These are very nice planes that won't break the bank when it comes to GiantScale in my opinion.

thanks for tje replies. Dale, did you mount the ignition battery on the firewall and did you have any c/g problems using the BME 50?

It would seem to me that using a glass filled mount for this engine would be inviting trouble. The flanges on the BME are wide and the mounting holes large leaving little room for supprt at the edges of the mount. Wouldn't it be advisable to use only aluminum?

Skip, I have my battery/ignition going in in the cavity right above the landing gear. It will keep everything internal, and clean(hopefully). The CG is looking real good so far, I've had as much of it together as I possibly can, to keep check on CG, and it's looking very managable, without any additional weight. I have the tank slated to go directly over the CG, as there is tons of room there, and with a gasser you can take advantage of this. We need all the advantage we can get.
As for the mount, only time will tell. This mount is a very stout unit, and it seems to have plenty of meat to it. Like anything else though, it took a bit of patience making sure alignments were perfect. I really think if the mount breaks to the point that it's a major problem, there's alot more going on other then a broken mount. You can bet, as in all my other planes, it will get pre-flighted to the moon.
I also went with the "pitts" muffler for the BME. This required a bevel cut on the bottom of the firewall. I just angle cut a small triangle (about 3/4"to 1" or so) of the bottom/front area. Then refaced the area here, and pinned it.
This allowed me to mount engine without adding a block behind it, as you see in the link/pic above, that guy added a block behind the whole mount. I just cut away the part of firewall that didn't clear the muff.
Another advantage is it's keeping the engine/thrust washer perfectly aligned with plans, so thrustline doesn't change.
It ended up looking very clean, and the added triangulation in that area is a bonus, without ANY added weight.
It's a real nice plane, I'm really liking it, can't wait to get it done. I need patience in that area too. I haven''t wanted one done this bad in a loooonngg time. It's getting tough. Still lots of work ahead though.

the modified great planes mount is plenty strong - it didn't even break when i ran out of gas in a torque roll

Thanks for the replies. I just ordered a Hanger 9 mount from Don's Hobby shop and will decide which to use later. I also will cut away the firewall and brace it to clear the Pitts muffler. I believe this is the way to go. Keep it simple as possible. I have built and flown all the Midwest 80" kits but had powered them with Moki 2.1 engines. They are brutes but I was getting tired of all that glo fuel they burn. I also like the fact that Gassers aren't particular about tank placement. Thanks again, Skip
