Default 60 cc engine performance?

I fired up my Taurus 62 for the first time today. It is not new, but apparently has only about 1 to 2 gallons of fuel through it. Can anyone out there give me any idea of what I should expect. It is turning a Menz 24x10 at 5500 and a Top-Flight 22x10 at 6400. The engine does seem to run fine otherwise. It idles smoothly at about 1600 with either prop and accelerates well.
I have not played with the low end needle much, but the high end seem about right. I was sort of expecting over 7000 with the 22x10. Gas is regular with 50:1 oil that works great in my Zenoahs and Taurus 52.

I am in Florida and it is hot at sea level and very humid which does make a difference, I know. We pump soup not really air.

Anyone have any input here? Thanks, pro-team! (photo of the set-up - note home-made plate for throttle connection fitted between the carb and the block (Yes it has a hole for the pump)

Default 60 cc engine performance?

OK, not many have a Taurus, but what about a similar displacement 3W60, ZDZ60, FPE, Fox etc. Anybody have sea level numbers?

Thanks,

Gerry Rosebery

How come a company that makes an engine from a chainsaw cylinder can't spend another dollar for a piece of G10 epoxy board to rotate the carb and eliminate the bell crank ?

An excellent question. I wondered the same thing. The engines are the quietest and smoothest I have ever run. If you do that right, why not get the throttle connection set up properly. My first ZDZ was the same though - a carb straight out of a chain saw. What are they thinking??

Carb straight out of a chain saw is the best carb there is for a model airplane gasser...Simple, effective, and inexpensive...
If you use a 24 inch prop on a 60cc engine the best thrust comes from one with an 8 pitch turning more rpm.....

The point was not the type of carb, but the failure to provide any sort of connection for models. If you look at my picture you will see that the throttle connection is on the FRONT of the carb with no provision at all for connecting a pushrod from the back. The bellcrank and plate are mine. The modeller should NOT have to re-engineer a $600+ engine to make it work. That is the point.

Well taken. The only engines I have seen with with the throttle already set up are mine and DA engines...

Can't help with the sea level question, Gerald. My Brison 3.2 turns a 20 x 10 MSC prop at 7200 RPM at 5800' altitude. It came with a nice anodized throttle bellcrank already installed. Your comments and RCIgn1's posts makes me wonder how many other engines make you jury rig the throttle. I just assumed engines sold for model use would come with a proper linkage. So much for assumptions.

As for power comparisons - these are hard to be exact -
setup I showed runs 6400--on 24x10 MenzS- tho I really like to run it slower -
around 6200-
This the latest setup ZDZ60 -having a Walbro WJ38A same as on the 80 singles - power is up and all in all very smooth .
on 22x10 props the rpm is in the 7000 's but performance-not as good
the 24x10menzS is -so far the best STOCK propmatch in this 19 lb model -
we gave away the Mejzlic -24x10- lots of revs - but the " instant pull just wasn't there --
each brand engine has it's own best operating setup and this seems to be the best "non tuned" setup on this 60 .

Have you tried a 24-8 prop ? My G62 pulls way better with a 24-8 than it does with a 22.-10..Never flew it with a 24-10....

I was going to buy a 24x8. This is on a 20 lb Laser 200 1/3 Scale so the larger prop would be better.

Default 60 cc engine performance?

From my experience with my zdz 60.

Menz S 22x10 for break in and after that it turned it @ 7000

Menz 22x12 @ 6700

Pro zinger 24x10 @6200

The prop that I'm using now is the Menz S 24x8 and really like how it pulls my 17lbs Cap.

hope this helps ,

the 24x10 mejzlic was not a good match for my 19 lb 1500 sq in model - too small - the wider blade stuff pulls much better .
so the 23 x10 -tho I am sure would match some setups well - is not good for my model

I've been flying my Giant Stinger for 2 years now with a stock G-62. I started out with the Zinger 22 x 6-10. Like you said, will hover, but not much else. I bit the bullet and bought a Mejzlik 22 x 10 and couldn't believe the difference. It was like putting an 80cc engine up front. I'm turning it 7700, and the GS weighs 19 lb. It hovers at 3/4 throttle or so, and will pull out quite nicely in 95 degree weather. Fuel consumption was cut by 1/3. I fly for 15 min, have a 20 oz tank, and normally have 8 to 10 oz. left when I land. I think the carbon fiber props are just really effecient when you get to the larger sizes. I've never tried a good Menz, but my buddy runs those on a ZDZ 80 with good results.

My G62 (CH Ignition ans 22X10 Zinger @7400rpm) powered GS hovers at 3/4 throttle and will pull out ok. I have a new Pro Zinger to try as well. This one does not need to fly any faster at all.

Default Giant Stinger Weight

I know I said my GS weighed 19 lb. so I thought I better reweigh it since that was the new weight. Well in 2 years and many modifications(no crashes ) later, it weighs 20 lb. 4 oz. Ready to fly, no fuel:

G-62, no spring starter
B&B cup mount & muffler
4" True Turn lightened backplate spinner
5- Hitec 645 MG BB servos
1- std servo on throttle
2-700 mah battery packs(4.8 volt) w/switches
Klett tail wheel
Fiberglass cowl, wheel pants, wing cover, fuel tank cover, and built up turtle deck.
Four bolts in wing, with front bolts going through 1" dowls.
B&B wheel pant brackets
