Default Da 85 or zdz 90

I will be building a speed project. Can either one of these engines have the cylinder turned so that the exhaust is out the rear? If not any other singe cylinder engines around this size be able to? Looking to run a 18x20 - 20x18 prop.

I am pretty sure they do. Xoar made a 20x18 as listed on TBM. Also supercool props has them. I will use a real tuned pipe with it also.

TOM could either one of those be modified to work? If the cylinder bolt holes match then could the cylinder be turned and the ports matched up? Also if the rings are pinned could the rings pins be relocated also? I would prefer a rear exhaust set up but if I have no choice then a wrap around header will have to do.

You can't turn the connecting rod, which would have to be turned 90* to achieve your goal. There also reamians a pretty srrious issue with cylinder flange and counter balance interference. The answer remains no.

Wow
LOL what is that for. where did i say i wanted to turn the connecting rod. I know nothing about this engine and the reason for the questions. From what i know some piston rings are pinned so the ring gap stays aligned so that the ring ends do not cross a port and break off. thar was the reason for the piston pin question.

TOM thanks for your replys.

TOM do you know of any single cylinder engines in this size range that i can make into rear exhaust or one that comes that way?

i pretty sure,, almost positive,, that there isnt a company out there that makes a prop with the pitch being larger than the diameter.
If there is, send me a PM with the company,,, I would like to try one out..

as far as i know,, Menz makes the most agressive props

Some specialized manufacturers do make extremly high pitched props. Some can be special ordered in quantity.

I cannot think of any gas engine offhand that has an aft facing exhaust port. All are on one side or the other, and when combined with ring pin stops, eliminates any possibility of rotating 90 degrees. That doesn't begin to factor case to cylinder port matching.

ZDZ 40 RE is the only rear exhaust that I know of, it won't swing those props. Rick

However, if someone really wanted to get into it they could go to a place like Precise Cast and redesign the entire top end of an engine. You would have to want to spend a few barrels full of money though.
