Default carb setting question

DLE 20 high speed needle seems good, has good transition from idle but when I throttle back to idle it takes a few seconds for the motor to settle back down to the idle speed. Any tips on what I've done wrong? Go easy its my first. Also when I throttle back down the motor sounds gurgly. I'm thinking lowspeed is.a bit rich but don't really know. Thanks in advance.

The LS is too lean if it won't back down right away. You can run it like you have it if you like. Mine runs fine like that, but not being able to drop down predictably makes me crazy, especially on short final. Mine is gurgly down low as well, but performance is outstanding, so I just live with the sound?

Just a thought...try a prop that will load it a little more. Think about a chain saw how they sound when not udner a load at all. Make sure the engine is warm when you adjust it and not been on a idle very long. Turn the Low speep needle cloclwise to lean it a tad. Check to see if the engine throttles up fairly fast...if it starts to die on quick throttle up you are getting it too lean. Set the Low speed mix where it still runs smooth and will throttle up good without thatbig hesitation. Capt,n

I leaned it up a little and got a hesitation when throttling up, I'm gonna try a little higher pitch prop and play with the needles some more. May even switch oil i am using as now i've read it's not the best to use. So far it hasn't died on me yet other than the first 2 flights but i prefer to be able to put 100% trust in the way it's running. Very impressed thus far!

Go very very little on the needle change, sometimes less than a 1/16 turn. See Jody's instructions for tuning in the Gas for newbie thread, lots of good info in there. the xoar 17x6 seems to be the sweet prop for this engine.

I’ve had simular problem with my DL50. I’ve tried everything but the idle was staying high for the few seconds before settling to low idle. The problem went away by itself after few tanks through the engine - I’m not sure how many of them, one time I’ve realized that the engine stop doing that. If you follow the tuning procedure and it’s still acting up just give it some time for breaking-in. I’m using mix on my radio for the throttle, higher “safe†idle for flying and very low for landing.

If it hesitates, you leaned it out too far. Adjust your low needle until it gurggles ( 4 cycles ), at about 1/3rd throttle when you backoff. Then peak your high end, and back off counter clockwise 200 - 300 rpm. Always adjust your high speed needle last.

In my opinion, a two to three hundred rpm rich drop high speed needle setting on a gasoline engine is too rich.

Thank you gentlemen for all your help. I went out this morning and richened up the LS a bit( and i mean a bit) and readjusted my HS to peak. No hesitation and no hanging idle.

But of course. There's never been a reason to leave that much power on the table with a gas engine.

Some can't get rid of their glow syndrome.
