Default Running up to full throttle ?

Is it necessary to run a well tuned gas engine up to full power after starting, as most are accustomed to doing with a glow engine ? It seems to me that I have read that this is not necessary with a gas engine. Do you do this and why ?

After starting I allow my engine to warm up and then run it up briefly to WOT to make sure that all is well.

Well lets put it this way...its not a bad idea to make sure the engine is not "loaded up" from being on idle . You want to make sure the engine is going to do its best on take-off. That helps prevent a poor take-off and maybe a not so good happening. Just Like George says....clear its throat! Capt,n

I seem to remember seeing many a full size airplane run up to full power before moving onto the hot ramp.  Don't know why it would be any different for our smaller versions.  You would TRUST that the engine is in working order before taking off?  I'd trust, but then I would VERIFY!!

Probably no reason anyone would want to know how well their engine was running and if they had full power available prior to take off. Probably doesn't matter if throttle response is as crisp as anticipated. Really no reason for that at all...........

I lot of full sized aircraft power up and check to see if each magneto is working. They have 2 spark plugs per cylinder. With both mags firing your good to go. If one of the mags does not fire and if the one that does fire quits...if your airborne....your going to need to land...like right now! Capt,n

+1 for clearing the throat. Actually make sure it is capable of. The plane should be well secured in place to do this.

Heck, I even do it with an electric motor, we check all the other controls prior to take off, why wouldn't one check the available power before committing their pride and joy to thegraces of gravity.

I run it up.. I like to know that it is going to have the power when you need it.. I have found a couple of issues on run up that could have been bad to discover in the air.

For some reason, I have more confidence with motors than with engines and most of time skip the full run-up step. So far so good. :-).

What kind of problem did you see with motor during full run-up?

I run mine up on the first start of the day. That's about it. After that I figure it's a pretty safe bet it's good to go as soon as it's warm enough to take the throttle...

i say, run it up and down a few times. can't hurt anything as long as the plane is tied down. you may discover that it might pull lean or run to rich and blubber at top end. most times not.....but it could change do to a different oil you have switched to etc. it pays to check it out for a few seconds. it sure can't hurt to know your motor is putting out, when you throw the coals to it on take off............happy landings.......RON

Run Forest, run! just don't go on and on and on like this guy at our field. It is really annoying to listen to a glow screaming for 10min on the ground while your trying to fly. Then he crashs anyway on take off because he leaned it to death

It might help someone to post this run up data(if your talking glow)in the GLOW FORUM....this is a gas forum here. Tallking the way glow engines run is far different than gas engines. Slimers not wanted here!....................

I like to let it warm up and then do a couple of run ups to full throttle before I taxi. It is a good time to check and make sure everything is running right, no unusual vibrations, and no twitchy throttle servos. I have had all of those at one time, or another.
