I think thats because of his restricted exhaust.I tuned mine and got 6500 with the 20x10 today .Idle is best around 1500.I can try a 20x6 as i have one laying around if anyone wants to know rpms with the canister?

Please go ahead and try the 20x6. That will yield a valuable piece of information about the canister.

One of the muffler's exhaust pipes is still restricted with a 3/8 inch orifice which I'm sure is limiting the RPM. It's just not an efficient way to reduce noise.

Rocketman, that's good you got some rpm back, does having one of the restrictors in place drop the sound much?

Mighty9, with your advice I didn't bother with the mesh.
I ordered a mld 35 canister from here http://www.sdshobby.net/canister-muffler-for-mld35mld70-p-4137.html

But being an impatient bugger I decided since it was pissing rain I would have a go at making one myself.
It is an electronics project box, I inserted two pipes that are screwed in at the top and jb welded at the bottom.
I have drilled a few holes in them and will check the rpm, if it drops too much I can drill more holes, till I find a balance I like.
It's a tad heavy at 249grams compared to the wolf muffler which is 139 grams, but it's probably still lighter than a canister.
I have no idea how it will perform, I have to wait till the jb weld sets before it can be tested.

Mark it will be quieter but you may need to open up those holes in the stacks a bit. Believe it or not you can open up the crimped ends and it will still be quieter.Also jb weld will not work on an exhaust as it is not heat resistant. The canister is 9 0z. Your muffler weighs 8.78 oz

I didnt have a 20x6 only a 20x8 and with that i get 6900 rpm .

Thats pretty good then. I think a zinger prop is a little more load than xoar prop. I have both a xoar 20x8 and 20x6 lying around that i will try and run in a couple of days.

Hey Mighty9, yeah I'll use the canister when it arrives, it hangs down toofar and the exhaust flange wouldn't hold up over time.
I had a bit of time to kill so it was an experiment more than anything.

OK I just gave it a run, I lost a small amount of exhaust noise but lost 500 rpm.
I'll wait for the canister.

I understand that Mark . You will love the canisters sound.Im pretty sure you will have to mod that header just a bit so dont be surprised.The holes are a little bit to close together.That stainless is tough to file so get a stone for your dremel. I used my bridgeport to open mine up some.

That's a really attractive price for a canister and header.

I thought that the header and canister setup that you bought were fitted specifically to the PTE36R. Is there also a significant mismatch between the engine's exhaust port size and the header inlet?

Thats the exact canister i have guys. There is a mismatch of the exhaust port and the mounting bolts.It doesnt leak and seems to run fine though.It is veryyyyy quiet .

If anyone has questions about stock mufflers vs canisters, you might want to read some interesting data provided by jedijody in his post #3293 on page 132 of the "NEW DLE30!" thread http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_88...32/key_/tm.htm .
He uses three different props and compares the stock muffler with a canister on a DLE30. His findings show that the canister performs well with lighter loading props.

Hi Catpower, I have never seen or heard a pte factory muffler, so I can't tell you how that performs/sounds.

I have a wolf muffler, which is quite acceptable, (about the same as a dle30) however I would like to make it more quiet if I can, that's why I ordered a canister for it.
I'll report back when it arrives.

Mighty9 has the same canister I ordered, perhaps he could elaborate what it compares to.

Perhaps the dealers in the USA who sell the engines with the stock mufflers could do db tests on them? Surely that is possible in the mighty USA?

Hi Guys,

I don't understand what all the controversy is over the noise issue is honestly. The PTE36R is not any louder than a DLE30 I have used, run, and flown both engines side by side and I cannot tell any sound differences. I have not put them on a dB meter so I cannot say one is louder than the other. I have had several guys at our flying field that said these are quite in comparison to other gas engines. We do have noise restrictions at our field, which is strictly monitored. Nothing is aloud over 95dB.

I havent run mine on the stock muffler only the canister but i do know the canister is very quiet .I do know i am considering getting another one of the engines too.

Perhaps TBM could do some db tests on the stock muffler then?

Catpower, what plane do you intend it for?
If you are worried about noise would you be prepared to use a canister?

On the bold, as a DLE 30 owner, that's what I'm wondering? What are these engines being used on? I haven't read everything, but it appears that the PTE36R engine has significantly more power than the DLE. The 10-12lb DLE 30 powered planes I'm aware of in this class are already grossly overpowered, and the 50cc class planes are too heavy? Where are the 12-14 (maybe 15?) lb, 1200 - 1400 sq in planes these might work best on? Or is the plan to build an ultra light weight 50cc class?

I felt my EF 78 inch Extra was adequate with the Syssa 30 on a pipe at about 12 pounds. Nothing outrageous, but I felt it could use more power. I removed the Syssa (it is for sale) and put on a big Hacker instead.

Well i can say they have a plenty of power for my application. I have mine in Bill Hempel 50 cc cub. I watched the video of the dle 30 powered cub. Mine jumps off the ground like Bills 55cc powered cub. It will pull vertical out of site.Not with the authority of the 55cc but better than a dle 30.My plane is almost 14 pounds. Also i doubt a dle 30 would spin a 20x10 prop as well as the pte 36.I wanted a dle 30 for another project but i think ill buy another pte.

Most if not all stock exhaust diverters (mufflers) provided with 2-stroke gas engines are loud. You may get away with using them in those wide open states where there are almost no people. If you fly either the DLE30 or the PTE36 at a field where there are noise restrictions they will both be perceived as being too loud. A small difference between them won't matter, loud is loud.
That is the reason there is such a high demand for aftermarket mufflers for gas engines.
