Default DLE20 to replace an OS FS120 Surpass??

Hi All,

Any comments on how appropriate the DLE20 would be to replace an OS FS120 Surpass four stroke engine? It looks like the all-up DLE20 weight
is slightly less than the OS, but I'm not sure if the power is comparable? The application is somewhat weight sensitive (Great Planes Gee Bee R2),
so I'd only like to go up to the DLE30 if necessary!

What do you guys think? Has anyone swapped out these two motors before?

Thanks,

John

I replaced an OS 120 FS with a DLE 20 in a VQ Hurricane, and in a Top Flite P-40. Both worked out great. The biggest problem I had was I had to move both batteries forward into the cowling to balance with out adding weight. The OS turned a 15-8 three blade prop 8,250. The DLE turns same prop 8,550. This plane has way more power than needed. The P-40 power with the OS was just barely OK. With the DLE it has plenty of power but not way overpowered like the Hurricane.

Here is the P-40 with the cowling painted and proper spinner. I used a J-Tec compact pitts muffler. With the radial cowling of the Gee Bee you should be able to use the stock muffler.

Did you have to rebuild the firewall? Ddi you use the OS mount? You moved the batteries foward because you needed more nose weight?

Is that P-40 similar in size to the Top Flite 1/7 P-51? Just so happens my friend that Ibuild with has one of those already built. It would be awesome if Icould have the cowl enclosed like that on the 51.

Hi All,

OK, I've ordered a DLE-20 for my GP Gee Bee R2! One issue I will surely have to deal with is an exhaust extension. I don't think there is any way that the little stubby port on the stock muffler will protrude outside the cowl! So, what to do? Can i extend it with a piece of flexible silicone tubing without sacrificing (much) performance?

Thanks,

John

Stock 1/2" copper plumbing fits tight, but great.
Get a joiner & a short piece, maybe an elbow.

In answer to questions, I had to place the batteries forward because the DLE 20 is lighter than the OS 120 FS. Also info re power was incorrect. I flew the Hurricane today and with engine broke in and cooler weather it tached at between 8,900 and 9,000 rpm with the 15-8 three blade Graupner prop. The 120 turned it 8,250. With it unloading in the air it could be turning over 10,000 rpm which I think is too much. So I may put on a longer prop, maybe a 16-8-3. I didn't rebuild the firewall on either one, but did reinforce the Hurricane's
