Just got hit upside the head with the obvious.....
After my episode with the firewall coming loose and many stitches in my hand, I was wondering what I could easily do to prevent any more cuts.
Opened my chain saw case and there sat a pair of kevlar gloves made for use with a chain saw. Duh! Why not use them when starting a gasser engine. Might still get smacked but it should prevent any more amputations. A broke finger is better than one removed.

That is a good idea. I remember seeing pics, but somehow I missed the amputated finger, really sorry to learn of this. I hope everything works out for you in the future.

I have been useing Kevlar gloves for a few years now and they work great. Got mind from grainger.com along with Kevlar sleeves that extend up your arm. You can't be to safe!
