Looking for some help on a engine for a hanger 9 extra plane calls for a 85 cc engine would a DLE 111 be to much for this plane.

No, Will not be to much but you might have the plug caps sticking out of the cowl.

It is a 88cc but does not run as smooth as a twin.

A friend of mine has one with the DLE111. The engine fits totally within the cowl, nothing sticking out. Smooth, quiet and plenty of power.

That is a really nice engine. You say it flys the plane really good?
