Default Bosch cap/possible CH Ignition problem

Should I be concerned with the heat shrink tubing splitting around my Bosch Ignition cap? Trying to isolate a problem with a weird running Brison engine.

i have a Taurus52 and the shrink tube is split like your's, same cap.as long as the braided wire is still making good contact with the metal cap i don't see a problem, mine runs fine.

I would try the liquid electrical tape on it from Harbor Freight. It comes in a 4 ounce bottle with a brush in the cap for areas like yours where dissassembly is not an option to restore the insulation. I've used it on many parts to restore them.
Looks to me, like the mechanical solder joint for the braid shielding is still solid but inspect it closely for cracks or looseness before using the product on it.

Bass, what are the symptoms of the cranky engine? You may have another problem. As long as the shield is OK, that wouldn't cause any engine problems. Dan.

Dan, I just typed about 3 paragraphs of all the coincidental weird running issues I'm having but somehow it just disappeared and timed out as I was about to post the info. So this is basically what's happening without all the extra weirdness as I'm too tired to type it all over again. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11134649/tm.htm

bass, you're getting good advice at that thread. If you decide to scrap it, I could use the piston and cylinder assembly. Dan.

I can send you a replacement ignition to try. What style case is it in? Older brown aluminum, plain aluminum or chromed plastic like an RCexl? Futaba style plugs or Deans plugs?

gr8flyer55, What a guy. Thanks for the offer but I just figured out the problem a few hours ago. I borrowed another mechanical advance C&H Ignition from another plane I have and the engine runs flawlessly again. I'm going to try replacing the Bosch cap with a new one I have on hand and rewire the battery leads and see if I can get the old (silver case) one to function as it should again. If not , I may have to convert to a fixed timing RCexl unit and modify my engine/timing ring to accept it. I do like the C&H mechanical timing setup though. Worked great for years and years!

By the way, the CHs are available again. Stick with them. Dan.
