Does your engine have the compression release valve? That should solve your compression / hard cranking problems.
For those that wonder or care, I've seen far more Q 75's with a mag than electronic ignition. These engines were available for at least a decade before electronic ignitions were even common!

it had one , but its closed off with a 10-24 bolt , i know where i can get a new one , may need to get one.
is a 24 10 pitch the best prop for these? dont really have the right prop
this engine may have been upgraded to electronic , but has no mag mounts on the cylinder head , its got a pioneer
p-51 saw engine muffler and i think the head is a p-51 head.

Here's my procedure for my sachs 4.2 on a Ziroli corsair. Close choke, throttle to 1/4, turn on ignition, crank until fires. Open choke, flip prop quickly back and forth to compression (rotate prop one way to compression, then other way to compression)a dozen times, then flip to start. Usually starts on first or second flip. Good luck, red

its not got a plane yet , its going to go on the bates hawker tempest i'm building or a bridi big bee.
ive got 4 gas engines , and the only one that will fit the tempest perfectly is the US-41 , the other 3 , a Q-75 , Q100, 3W 70
all are too long for the engine bay , and making everything on the plane longer will make it look stupid.
plans on the tempest show a 27-10 prop .

24x10 is the correct prop for the 75. Just use a quality prop. I hear ya about the compression, I have had a couple times when I thought my arm was going to fall off trying to get a 150 fired up. All the time I can remember that scenario there was something amiss with the engine. Things like bad ignition batteries, air leak, choke butterfly not closing completely, clogged filters and even mis adjusted throttle trim are all things I have encountered. Once you find and fix the issue or just figure out what starting procedure works for this engine it will end up hand starting easily. I'm sure you have figured out I am against starters on big engines, I have seen them slip off spinners and right into the prop twice.
