Is this an engine that has been running OK in the recent past? Did the problem just develop? Suddenly or over time?

Probably just needs a good carb cleaning and new diaphragms. Reset the needles making sure it is not too lean on the low end. Being too lean on the bottom end can cause the engine to "hang" on a high idle for a bit before it settles down to a normal speed.

One thing to watch for on the DA50 is the white colored reed cage the carb seats against. This part is prone to warp over time (especially if the carb bolts are over tightened) causing an air leak. if you can see excessive distortion, I'd recommend you replace this part along with new gaskets in the area.

If it is an earlier DA50, there used to be a carb mod from DA. Had something to do with the left over fuel in the bottom of the carb. If you are unsure, call Tony at DA and have your SN looked up to see if the mod was accomplished.
