Default g-38 or us-41

Hey guy's, I'm real having a hard choise to make here. Some poeple tell me that the US 41 engine is reliable but does not have the power that the G 38 has, but the HP ratings in the B&B book say that the us41 has 3.0 HP and the g38 only has 2.3 hp.
I know it all depends on how there test's are run but how about some real life experiance to set the record straight.
What ever the choice I make I need two eng's new in box for my next big bird.
Thanks to whom ever responds.

Personally I would go with the G38, it's a more established/better engine, and it's lighter than the 41.

Id say the G38 over the US41 due to better overall quality.I,d take the Quadra 400 (38cc) over either the G38 or US 41.I,ll admit Im biased since I own two of them, one electronic and one magneto.

If I find my G45 too heavy for my plane, I will sell it.
$300 with spring started and Bennet muffler.
Over $500 invested.
I should find out after the holidays

I'll go with Kevin on this one. The G38 and a properly tuned US41 are too close to call on thrust - my 38 seems to get it better through rpm and the 41 with prop pitch, so the model type should govern the decision between the two of them.
I have two Q400's and at 39cc and 1/2 pound lighter, they are easy to start, very reliable and pull a 20x10 between 6900 and 7150 rpm depending on the density altitude and prop make used on that day.

I'd go for the Q 400 also. Lots of power for its size and reliable too. Look at their website under Quadra Aerrow.

For those who care the Quadra 400 is quite unlike the older better know Quadra 35 or 42 or US 41 which is a Quadra spinoff. It is a very squat, over square design, using a reed valve intake on a plastic block which can be rotated. Its available in an electronic version, utilizing a pretty cone shaped prop driver and a CH variable timing ignition.
I have the magneto model in a big Lazy Ace Bipe (84" version) using a spring starter and the muffler that came with the engine and the electronic one in a 1/3 Sig Spacewalker with a Bisson side mount muffler.
Im using wood 20x6x10 props because I got 8 of them at a bargain price from a friend .They turn in the 7000 range and fly both above models with authority. Both start very easily, idle as smoothly as any gasser I have owned with solid midrange.
No they wont hover the above models.and vertical is definitley limited, and I couldnt care less!Yes there are many other engines available in this range but this thread started as a Quadra vs Zenoah comparison remember.......

i'm running a twin with g38's. weight is 22kg,12ft wingspan, turning 18/10 at 7200 to 7400. these engine-props will pull the model off the ground 20 ft roll to at least a 50 degree climb. very reliable. hope this helps.

What type of aircraft Wig?No criticism intended but you sound a little overpowered. If you had had a more modern design pair of 30 or 35 cc engines would you still have gone with the G38s?So many gas twins seem overpowered to me and I have been wondering whether we all forget that we are doubling the horsepower with a twin for the same frontal area, and nowhere near double the weight of a very large single engine plane.
Im really interested in all opinions.........

Thanks.......

Default Zenoah over US42

No question about it! The G-38 has more power, more reliable, less shake, and is far more user friendly. I'll never buy another US or Quadra again.

bought the aircraft secoundhand. it's a junkers 88. yes it is overpowered, flys at a more realistic speed on one engine. have other scalies that are powered just right but this one is good for the wow factor from the public on open days

I flew the G38 and it is a very good strong motor.. However,, I found the 3 part crankshaft easy to bend and very expensive. $150 or so just for the part. If you never hit the prop this is not an issue and mine was due to radio failure. But check replacemant parts to be sure you make the right choice.

I would fly the G38 again,, Jim

Default G38

The post says 22 Kilograms..22 KG is 48.4 lbs...Not overpowered with 2 G38 engines, IMHO....
AND...It's hard to bend a G38 bad enough to not be repairable, usually $40.00....

Wiggles,
I want that Ju88! How much would it cost to ship it to me?
Sounds like an awesome plane! I've wanted to build a big gas-powered one, but haven't seen plans anywhere. I started to draw my own plans but opted for the Don Smith 118" Bf110 plans instead. Can you post a picture?

Thanks but sorry Stuka barry. I have already found two g38's about a week ago and there being shiped. as we speek. this has been a very good informative thead, and thanks to all who responded. I have completed all the sheeting on my shikes foam wings and am now starting on the nacells, which will need those engines soon to mount up. this is going to be a great bird to finish and fly. I will be painting it in Bob Hoover colors and hope to start testing sometime in may.
Thank again to all, may all of you have as much fun as I do in this great hobby!!!!.

P.S. I will try and post Pics when finished.

Kamakaze, good luck with your shrike. Have you ever read Bob Hoovers autobiography "Forever Flying"?
If not , put it on your must read list. What a life he had!!!

Frenchy

By the way, I'm building a Hawker Tempest now and am puting a G-38 in it.

Default My Mentor

Hey French man. Well Ive never read that book, but I grew up watching Bob fly at Oshkosh for many years. Met him once. and always loved the way he fly's. unfortunatly I grew up , had kids and all. So I have not been back to see him fly in abou 22 years.
So Im settling for my giant rendition of his shike. and hope after im finished, to finaly go back and see him and have him sign my airplane. Wel thats my wish anyway.
Happy flying to all............Kamakazerc--- (Mike)

Kamakaze,
Sounds like a great dream. Be careful, you might put a tear in his eye. If this airplane is the culmination of 22 years of dreaming, then you owe it to yourself to read his book. Incredible story!!
Sad ending!!! When you have read the book, you will feel as if you knew him all his life.
I hope you get the opportunity to fly it for him.
My good friend, Sal Calvagna, flew his Me163 Komet for Rudy Opitz (one of the original test pilots), and I'll never forget the look in his eye as he watched it fly after 50 years. The tears were there. I have a great pic of it somewhere.

Well, again, best of luck to you,
Frenchy

"i'm running a twin with g38's. weight is 22kg,12ft wingspan, turning 18/10 at 7200 to 7400. "

It sounds like I am a bit late on this discussion but these figures are the exact prop numbers for a 3W-24 which is a lot lighter than a G-38 and very reliable. You can pick up used engines for about $400 each.
