quadra 50 rpm?
I have a Q50 in a 1/6 Typhoon model. I'm wondering if anyone else runs one of these engines and what RPM is normal?
This engine won't go over 6000 (usually runs 5500-5700 static) with a 20 x 8 propeller? Is this normal?

Sounds rather low.My quadra 400 (38cc) will turn a 20x8 wood close to 7000.
It is so difficult to diagnose problems like this on the net.......maybe give us a little more to go on.........Age and condition of the motor, are you sure of its history, prop make and model, plug, fuel, oil used and ratio, engine fully cowled or not ,muffler make and type.and an honest evalutation of your own comfort level with gassers, help available from your own club or not.................?

quadra 50 rpm?
The plane and engine was aquired second hand. The airplane had never flown and the engine had never been run. The plane has since had maybe half a dozen or so flights each year for the last 3-4 years. The fuel is being mixed 40:1 with oil. I've tried different props on it, but there's no appreciable difference. The throttle is opening fully and the mixture screws are set pretty good. The muffler is a custom job so I'm wondering if that's it. I'll see if I can get another muffler to try out.

Sounds like the muffler is a good place to start, but once again its hard to tell without seeing it whether there is enough restriction involved to cut back the rpm this much. When i run into a problem like this I prefer to take the engine out of the plane, put it on a test stand, and leave it there until Im sure the problem is understood and fixed.
Good Luck.....

As Kevin says , put it on a test stand. If your ears can stand it, run it without the muffler and see what r's your turning. You should only lose 3 or 400 rpm's with the muffler on.

rpms??
Kevin,
I am curious as to what prop you are using on your Q400
You stated close to 7000 RPM on a 20x8....
I run a 20x8 Zinger on a Q42. It is turning 7200 RPM, on a 20x8 Pro Zinger I turn 7900...
I was thinking of getting a Q400, but it sounds like maybe I should stick with my Q42
