Smoke tap
#2
By "Z80" I'm assuming that you mean the Zenoah GT-80? If so, I drilled & tapped mine at the base of one of the cylinder, on the 'flange' of the crankcase..... some disassembly required. I ended up using one of the B&B 90-degree smoke taps.
I did the above while awaiting a reply from Horizon on the best place to tape the engine. After I did the above I finally got a reply. They suggested putting a "T" fitting into the pressure line that drives the diaphragm pump on the carb.... case is already tapped!
I tried both ways (plugging the "new" tap when trying the "T" fitting method).... both ways did indeed work. Perhaps it was just a desire to be proven that I didn't do aa bad thing, but it seemed to me that the tap off the case worked a little better than the "T" method..... but the "T" method is a whole lot easier.
I'd suggest using the "T" method and giving it a try.... if you're happy with the performance, great. If not, you can always tap the case later.

Thanks for your replies.
I meant ZDZ 80. Its a problem because the rear carb prevents you from taping the back plate. Also there is no vacuum line to the carb to tap.
I had a similar problem with the G45 and wound up sending the engine to B&B to install the tap. They put it in the side of the cylinder wall.
I know people have used the B&B system with the ZDZ80. I just wonder where they put that huge tap. Its 1/4 in in dia. (od) I asked B&B if I had to use that huge tap and the answer if I wanted reliable smoke I needed to.

I did one ZDZ 80 for a friend of mine, another friend got one done by the guys at RC Showcase. I followed where RC Showcase did theirs - right on the 'flat-spot' of the gold ZDZ 80 'tag' on the side of the crankcase. By "flat-spot" I mean that area of the tag where there's no text.... worked great, smokes like crazy.
Again, some dis-assembly required, and be careful where the chips fall!

Thanks much for the replies. I have a drill press and a means to hold the engine but I still don't like drilling a high value part. I guess I have to if I don't want to spend more than $100 for a smoke system.
