Default fuel proofing?

Is there a prefered method of fuel proofing "gasser" firewalls? I normally use thinned epoxy. Is there anything better(cheaper)? Thanks in advance

On my gassers I never fool with fuel proofing the firewall. No need to. If you want to then a little epoxy or polyester resin will be fine.

The thinned epoxy is fine or a polyurethane spray.

Even though the problem isn't as bad as with glow. Oil is Oil no matter what it's mixed with, so you should fuel proof.

Just use the paint that is compatable with plane covering film.

Thinned epoxy or spray paint sprayed into a jar if you have to brush it on

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just go with the thinned epoxy.

You have to kidding - right? You have $600-$1500 invested in an engine, maybe another $500-$1000 in electronics, another $600-$3000+ in an airframe and you are worrying about the $.30 cost of epoxy to fuelproof the firewall?

No, I wasn't kidding. I'm out of Epoxy and my LHS is 40 miles away!

Nothing wrong with thinned epoxy EXCEPT that it's alot more ($$$) than a clear POLYURATHANE that you can get at any K MART,WALMART, MENARDS or any hardware store. That's right-it's cheaper & works just as well.

And when your muffler comes loose you will find out why it's a MUST to seal raw wood with the epoxy or polyurathane.

Actually I submit that polyurethane if a LOT more expensive a solution than epoxy. We all use epoxy all the time, but a pint (or quart) of polyurethane with a limited shelf life? If you have no other use for it, the polyuerethane will go off long before you use it up. At $7 a pint that's a pretty expensive solution.

Well after realizing I needed a few more items to complete the project I made the trip to the Hobby Shop and just bought Epoxy. Now I need a new kit so I can use all this Epoxy

Well,of course I had to run out & check the prices at Menards.

Minwax "Fast-Drying Polyurethane",1/2 pint(8 fl oz.) $3.75
A quart is $6.04...a good deal if you're also re-finishing a chair or if you're building 300 planes. Spray can(11.5 fl oz.) is $4.75

Other brands are a little higher but still cheaper than the epoxy.

Tower Hobbies Epoxy is $7.99 for 9 fl oz. Cheapest I've seen.

You're right about the limited self life, the urethane in the can will harden up in a few months.

The Polyurethane straight out of the can still get's my vote.
