Hey all,
My 50 has just about 8 gallons through it now. It has started to develope a little noise when I am starting it and it first starts running. If you have ever let yours run out of gas and get dry did you ever here that little noise that sounds like a rod bearing untill it gets oil? Starts fine and runs powerfully but that noise don't sound right. Do you think I might just need to richen it up? Anyone else experience this?
I am just finishing up my 32:1 Lawn boy ashless break in and am running a full length tuned pipe in a 2.3 extra.

Hey Rick
What you are most likely hearing is the reeds when they are dry.
I have a new DA 50 but have not started it yet, but have run other engines with reeds and they will make a strange noise when the reeds are dry.

Don't know when you purchased your engine ...
I sent mine back last year so they counld determine why it wouldn't run well ... turned out to be the electronic module.
But while they had it, they changed the bearings and crankshaft ... said it was precautionary ... had some early problems.
I had noticed the crankshaft moved fore & aft after 3 gallons of fuel ... now it doesn't.
Check for this movement ... if it is sloppy ... call DA ... maybe a bearing problem ... they have great service.

Hey guys I know all about DA's awsome service. No question there.
My crank is rock solid. No play at all. Just a strange clank, clank when twist the prop to and fro a few degrees. Like I said, I'm not too worried about it. Motor runs great and is really putting out some power too. Heck, I'm just going to keep on flying - if it busts I'll just send it back. I know I can get it back in a weeks time.
It could be the reeds, I never thought of that.
I just wanna know if I should fool with the needle settings as I'm running the tuned pipe.

The "clank" when you move the the prop tips back and forth is rod bearing play. Most 2 cycle engines have some, maybe 1/16th of an inch at the rod tips. If it gets to be more, say 1/4 inch you need to send it back. A freind of mine had a bme that did that, he sent it back and Kieth replaced the bearings and crank free.

Rick, I had this problem and I sent my engine in and they change a slew of things. It runs like jack the bear now! I would call Dave and ask what he thinks. It sounds like you are having a very good time with that engine/plane!

DA has great service however you should call and find out the best technique for settings -(not fooling) with the needles .
My engines all feel oily after flying - I look inside the mufflers or pipe occasionally and see if it looks dry /burned etc..
basically a tuned pipe engine requires a bit richer set of needles - the extra power is from more fuel ---A bit rich and wet is far better than a dry clanky feeling --
