Default Getting the most out of your GT-80??

A friend is putting a GT-80 on a H9 Sukhoi. What can he do to get the best performance possible out of the engine? He already has a Mejzlik 24x10. He has both the std mufflers, and a Bisson pitts muffler, which is best? I've heard of poeple punching holes in the std mufflers????? What about removing the spring starter, does this cause unnecessary drag? Fuel/oil mix??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sell it and buy a ZDZ80, BME105-110 or a DA100.

Joe,

I don't think that is in his budget right now. Do you have any tips on "getting the most out of your GT-80" other than selling it?

Use a prop with less pitch and more diameter...The GT80 LIKESand NEEDS rpm...If you're not able to get at least 8000 rpm in the air the prop is not right....
The spring starter can be removed to make the engine lighter..It CAN be hand started, just follow the instructions in the manual..
Our Formula One race planes clock 150 mph using a stock GT80, 9000 rpm in the air, 7400 on the ground..The plane in the picture is a Proud Bird by ED Rankin, pilot is John Lockwood...
These planes will be racing on August 19-22 in Ashtabula, Ohio..Come on out and see some FAST planes..Hopped up GT80s are clocking 180 mph in the same planes...Unlimited planes are running 220+ mph...

The J&A mufflers help add power compaired to the stock mufflers, even those with holes added.
The spring starter adds drag.

It's amazing to me how you can look through these many forums and see the same philosophy blabbed over and over again, and usually by the same people. It is basically a mentality that believes everything you have is not as good as what I have unless it's the same thing that I have and if you have the same thing that I have, mine is still better because it is mine.

Lighten up guys, it's amazing how much you can learn when you open your eyes and mind... just a little.

If your're talking about me, it's about 55 years with gas engines, 17 with Zenoah..The latest GT80 race engine was clocked this weekend at about 190 mph, straight and level flight, in a Kelly..
My Herbrandson 289cc twin race engines clock 234 mph...
How are yours doing ?
You ever OWN a GT80 ?

I know too many people that have been sending engines to RCIGN1 for too many years to doubt Mr. Cunninghams' credentials. ANY type of flight engine.

I have a GT80 on My H9 Sukhoi with the spring starter, Slimline mufflers and a Bolly 24X10 Prop. It will turn up 8600 RPM on the ground. Unlimited vertical and VERY reliable. If you want to hang the plane over the runway all day you would be better served with a more powerful engine but for me and my style of flying I couldn't be happier plus I kept about $500 in my pocket.

H .Wayne S. ; The "common man or woman" that posts on this board are trying to answer questions in a helpful and sincere manner. Smart *ss comments and elitist attitudes are the exception rather than the rule from my experience here.

Hey Robotech, I WANT your GT80 if it will turn 8600 with 24-10... My best one is at about 7200 with a 24-10 Zinger....
Or your tach...
Or your prop..
don't want to start a war here, a GT 80 that runs like that would be a secret weapon and would win for us in the F1GT class in Ohio in two weeks.. Any chance we could borrow it for about 3 weeks ?[8D]

I thought 8600 seemed a bit high. If I remember this particulat engine would turn 6400 w/ a 24-10 and Bisson pitts muffler.

WARNING!!! Loaning the GT80 to RCIGN1 is certain to create havoc upon it's return. You will no longer recognize your engine. None of the internals will bear any resemblane to the original manufactures specs. The carb will be capable of passing fuel in Niagara like quantities. The exhaust system will be interchangable with an F-14 afterburner.

Not quite..[8D]
The stock F1GT class is just that, stock GT80...That's why 8600 rpm would be so good...The stockers run around 150 mph....

If you were talking about Ralph having only three years experience, you'd better do a little research on that. If you're talking about me, I've been doing this since 1973. Still want to compare experience?

Right on, same numbers I got with mine How much difference can 4ccs make ? They must have run out of cylinders and put the larger ones on...The engines are otherwise identical, except the manifold
A really good 445 has won the USRA formula 1 championship for the last two years, beating all the GT80s....

I'll tach it again today to make sure I wasn't getting a false reading. I'm using the little $29 Hobbico tach.

Prior to getting the Bolly prop I was using a Pro Zinger 24X10. The power and performance increase has been amazing since I changed it out.

I'm on about my tenth gallon of fuel through the engine using Lawnboy Ashless @ 32:1 and it just keeps getting stronger.

With all this experience you offer, offer a little to the origional question to help answer the question asked.
