Is the $60 DA muffler reasonably quiet and efficient, or is it prudent to go the extra bucks for a Slimline or
Johnson?
I desire a compromise between performance and low engine noise.

The stock muffler is quite a bit louder than my Slimline. Having said that, the one I've seen gets about 100 rpm more than I do on the same prop and fuel, but that could just be tuning. It's pretty close for performance, but certainly the Slimline is quieter.

I have a DA-50 that had a standard exhaust on it when I bought it. We db'd it at 102db. Very loud. Too loud for our field. I ended up ordering a cannister.

Have the slimline and a bisson muffler, even with the stacks cut on the bisson it's quieter but less performance. Getting 6700rpm on bisson with 22x8 msc prop, 7000rpm on slimline and same prop. Also the slimline fits a confined space better.

I have DA50 on SL pitts and it seems a bit loud for me after running my other DA50 on a KS 1060 full length tuned pipe. The tuned pipe is so quiet and pleasant. I would like to try a can like the MTW. Is that what you have Mike? I get great performance on both setups. No sure I would buy anything but a can or pipe from now on.

I have the DA50 and KS1060 pipe on a composite arf 2.3 M extra 330. It weights 19lbs 6 oz and has plenty of power. What plane are you thinking about using the pipe on? It make more power than a canister if you need it.

Hey Joe,
Yes, I have the MTW. You're absolutely right. I can't see running a regular pipe ever again. Of course, it adds to the expense, but it's, as you said, pleasant to run. Plus, our club has a 100db limit.
I would be curious to know the performance difference between the tuned pipe and cannister (which I thought was a tuned pipe of sorts).
