"Normal" engines will start if you put the prop against compression and just flip. The Zenoah engines are different.

If you use the old technique, the magnet is past the pick-up at this point and you get no spark.

Locate the prop so that compression is at the 11 o'clock position. Then start flipping with the prop blade at about 3 o'clock and flip it almost 180 degrees.

I imagine you get a spark when the plug is out of the cylinder. Try another plug on the plug wire with the original plug still inserted, with engine compression.

You have to really flip the prop to get a spark.

Or, use an electric starter, a big one!

I have yet to see someone actually hand flip and start a G-62. I know, lots of folks say they do, I just haven't seen one actually do it when I was watching! They have a smaller fly wheel than many magnito engines their size and besides having to have the magnets in the right position when the flip is started (as mentioned in a previous post), they also have to be spun FAST to make a spark big enough to start!

I didn't want to go to the trouble of adding an after market ignition system, or the C&H jump start system (which I hear works great) I just spent the extra +/- $40.00 and bought the spring recoil starter. Simple, effective, and works every time...just get your hand out of the way when you release the prop, as it swings the engine through HARD [X(]

topgun007:

pettit and RLDIII are giving you really good advice.

It's advice that's actually in the Zenoah instruction manual, but for some reason, not many people see it. I've seen some really experienced gas engine flyers go nuts trying to start a G-62 by flipping it through compression. It Just Won't!

The spark is generated 90 degrees before compression, so in order to start a G-62, you have to flip the prop FAST through about 180 degrees, beginning at least 90 degrees before compression.

Spring starters do a really good job of that. Mine average only two flips to start. I've seen guys with big starters (Miller RC Products)have a lot of success too, but I haven't had to use mine for my new G-62's. They're just too easy to start with the springs.

I use a really stiff radiator hose to flip my props. I don't trust my fingers to any large prop, glove or not.

The inverted position of your engine, unlike glow, will have little or no effect on starting and running.

RC Ignitions will do a really nice job of fitting a G-62 with electronic ignition to solve this "problem," but after I figured out all the above, I'm kind of sorry I went to the trouble and expense to fit an ignition on my other G-62.

Happy Flying! You're gonna love it!

Red12 is right. you need to have it so wet it is dripping. Then if you line the prop up with the notches in the adapter and set it at about 20 degrees before the compression stroke of the engine and give it a hard flip it should start. I usually have to give it a few attempts, but with patience and perseverance it will start.
