Default Small 3W engines ?

Anybody have any experience with the new 3W 28 or even the old 3W 24? I am thinking of putting the 28 into a 1/4 scale Super Cub. I think it would be a nice set up. I don't have any experience with the small gas engines though. I am running a DA 100 and really like the big engines. What kind of RPM and on what prop for the small 3W. The only real concern I have with the small 3W is that it won't be enough.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan:

I've been running a coupla 3W24's on a YA P-38 for several years.

They turn 18 X 10 APC's at 6,900-7,100 rpm after break-in.

I've never had one quit on me (which explains how I've still got the P-38).

I think 3W24's have about 90-95% the power of G-38's. Of course, they're much lighter than a G-38 and just as loud.

You should do a forum search. There's a guy out there who owns about 15 of 'em, does some kind of research with 'em, and is very knowledgeable.

My only gritch about the small 3W's is the rear induction can be a pain for mounting (requires some planning and ingenuity) and the throttle horn is useless, maybe even dangerous. That can be fixed by grinding it off and installing a nice nylon steering horn.

Dan,

The 3W-24 is really too much engine for a 1/4 scale cub unless you want 10 ft takeoff rolls or you weigh it down to 20 lbs or so. Of course, there is always the throttle. Fuel consumption is about 1 oz/min at full throttle.

I am the guy that used multiple 24's in my research project and they are a super engine. 18 x 8 wide blade prop = 7800-8000 rpm, 18 x 10 wide blade = low 7k rpms. If your cub is 12 lbs or less, you will have unlimited vertical with the 3W-24. I have seen a pilot hang a 15 lb telemaster on the prop and slowly accelerate out. I have sold 15 of the 18 engines used in my research project and the remaining 3 are being reserved for "special projects".

Hope this helps

Elson

Thanks for the info guys!!!!! It sounds like I will go with the new 3W 28 (the replacement for the 24). I am looking forward to trying one of these small engines, I love running the big stuff so one of these little guys should be fun.

Thanks Again,

Dan
