Default 64 flame outs

I have a fuji bt64 and have been experiencing dead sticks too often. I have managed to get my bird down with little or no damage but this is getting frustrating. Gas engines should be more reliable than this. I am using 87 octane gas 40to1 oil and a 22x10 pro zinger. The engine dies on final approach or when throttling back to idle from mid or full throttle. Any suggestions?

The difficulty with your engine could be any of several things....

You could have the idle mixture just adjusted to lean. This is rather common, and the engine would be quitting from a lack of fuel.

There could be something bad in the ignition unit. As the engine slows down, the electrical pulse to the spark plug isn't as strong. If there's an internal short or other defect, the weaker pulse might be grounding out, but the pulse at higher RPM isn't. It could be heat-related, since you can start the engine, but it quits after it's been flying.

There's some kind of trash in the carburetor that blocks the low-speed jet.

There could be a bad gasket that leaks after a while...when the engine's had a chance to warm up and get some fuel through it.

To solve your difficulty, the engine should come into the shop.

My Fuji 64 flamed out today... totally unexpected. I was at low throttle, throttled up and boom. Thankfully, I was able to perform a near miraculous downwind landing that resulted in a projectile-like IMAC plane zipping across the runway and out into some very soft wet grass where it flipped over with NO DAMAGE.

Running the engine in the pitts exhibited the same symptom - flame out with anything faster than VERY SLOW throttle up. Back home, the manual suggested the top end may be a tad lean. I richened it up and now the engine throttles right up (on the ground) very reliably. However, the top end is a tad unsteady, wavering between clean running and too rich.

The engine has about an hour with 25:1, now an hour with 40:1. Admittedly, today's flights were made on gas that was probably 2 months old.

Can I go to even less oil in the mix without voiding the warranty, assuming the 2 stroke oil I am using is meant for 50:1 or even leaner? Is this safe to do?
Thanks,
Rich

With standard oils, we'd not go leaner than the 40:1 mix. If you use the Fuji Super Oil, you can go 100:1...even 150:1 if the engine's well-cooled.
