Default electronic ignition ???

hi fellows ,,,

all the gasoline engines i have used have had flywheel magnet ignition ,, i was thinking of doing away with the fly wheel and going with a electronic ignition ,, how long does a ( oh lets say 1400 mah battery ) last before needing a charge ,, 1-2 flights or all day ,, and how about rf noise ,, it would seem that with no flywheel you would eliminate rf noise ,, but i dont really know ,, i was just guessing at a 1400 mah battery ,, can someone advise me on battery size ,, and how long the battery will last on average ,, and is there any rf noise ,, would seem to me electronic ignition would be the way to go ,, if the battery will last ,, i would hate to go out and only get 2-3 flights and the battery is dead ,, comments,, help,, suggestions would be greatly appreciated ,,

thanks fellows ,,

Default RE: electronic ignition ???

electronic ignition is very popular for RC gassers. There are several units for sale from independent manufacturers. plus many new engines come with electronic ign as a standard feature. the 1400 mah battery pack is about right for a 2-cylinder engine. Two cylinders take more power of course to drive 2 spark plugs. My pack lasts for many flights - perhaps 2 hours of continous running time. It is also a function of the rpm of the engine. more rpm equals more sparks per second. Most ignitions are powered by 4.8 or 6.0 volt packs. So 4-cell or 5-cell AA battery packs work fine. For a single cylinder engine, you could probably get by with 800 mAh.

A single cylinder engine equipped with a CH Electronics ignition and a 1,200 mAh 4.8 volt nicad should get at least 7-15 minute flights before you should think about recharging.

They are very reliable, and properly installed with the correct components offer little to no RF noise. They also make starting an easy task that does not require a large starter.
