Default F.P.E Engines-What are your opinions?

I am thinking about using an F.P.E engine on my H9 Edge.....anyone using them, and what are your thoughts?
Also considering one for my Goldberg 30% Ultimate........

I have had 2 of them and there great engines, I just purchased one for my H-9 Sukhoi a 5.8.
These engines are very reliable and run great (not a DA) but I've never had a problem with them.

I was thinking about the 4.2 for the Edge, but the 5.8 isnt much more........one is 69cc and the other 95cc.....Alot cheaper than a DA!

I have a 3.2 on a 29% edge 540 and its a power house it's a great engine. As far as a DA it's just as good. I know a lot of people with fpe's and with da's and there both good engines the 3.2 fpe is very strong and will fly my edge straight up until i let off. Buy one you will like it.

Thanks

I had a F.P.E. 3.2 and the only reason I sold it was so I can get a new 3.4 when there released later this summer. Right now I have a 5.8 on a Hanger 9 extra 330. I've never had a problem and there the only gas engines I will buy. Great thing about living in my area I've gotten to to see different engine combos on the same arf's or kits that I have. People are asking me what I have in my plane and when I tell them an F.P.E. I here the same thing over and over that there engines are breaking in. I will take some numbers on my 5.8 and post them next weekend.

I have an FPE 2.4 converted to CH ignition on a great planes Christian Eagle. Great combination will climb indefinitely in knife edge flight. Spins a 20 x 10 APC at 7100.

I guy at my field has the 40cc version in a Chip Hyde Cap X and it runs great. He has had the engine for a few years in different planes and really likes it.

I have not tached my 3.2 so i'm not sure of the readings but its strong. My edge weight is 15lbs ready to fly, i don't have smoke on it. There a guy at our field that has a 2.4 on a waco bipe but he has not flown it yet when he does i will let you know how it does.

Thanks

I have a 2.4 that I have been using for about 3 years. It is sweetheart of a motor.

I have not owned one, but every one I have seen runs good, is very strong and the owners swear by them. I have seen identical ARF planes with the FPE and DA50 fly side-by-side with similar props and weights... The DA outpulls the FPE, but not by much. I think the DA has better midrange, but again, probably not enough to worry about. Overall the FPE seems to be a pretty good engine at a good price.

F.P.E is testing there new 3.4 should be out later this summer. It looks sweet can't wait to see it run. They were testing an 80cc twin last summer one was in an Ohio R/C ultimate and the other one was in an Aeroworks Edge arf and those motors were unreal.

I am looking at buying a SIG Extra300XS with an FPE 2.4. With this airplane, will this engine be a good powerhouse for "BASIC IMAC" competition? Is it hard to start and run? I would appreciate any input on this engine. Thanks.

Anyone know what might cause a rough idle on the FPE 3.2? Anyone ever send one in for service. Its true my FPE 3.2 is a powerhouse, but its real rough at idle even after messing with the mixture. Max RPM's on an NX 22x10 were 6300- So I am going down a size and pitch in that brand prop to see what happens.

Willy, have you had any vibration related problems with the airframe, using such a large one cylinder engine? Sounds like it may be a decent choice for my Radio Craft 35% Extra. Any thoughts on that?

I have had no airframe problems to include the radio gear. I'am kinda suprised at the vibration levels. I would say it's on the same level as a zdz 80.

AirborneSgt. How does it transition? How much fuel have you run through it? I would set everything back to the stock settings then start tweaking again. If nothing else give F.P.E. a call. There serivce is very good.

I am using 87octane with lawn boy ashless at about 32:1 just for break in. It pulls my Christen eagle off the ground in about 3-5ft! So yes its a powerhouse and smooth from mide to high. I am going to have to put in more of a throttle curve I guess. Transition is fast from Mid to Full throttle. the NX 22x10 is too much I think. I have spoke with Kurt about possible service. I have no complaints, and am thinking of getting a new FPE motor comming out.

I'm running a Menz 22x10 on my FPE 3.2 and it does great. I'm using Amsoil 100:1 mix mixed at 80:1 it idles good and it has good transition and good top end. I do think it has a little to much pitch for good hovering. I think the best prop for my set up would be a 23x8 prop.

Thanks

I have both the 2.4 and the 3.2. the 2.4 is in a Great Planes Super Stearman with over 300 flights and the 3.2 is in a Wild Hare Edge 540 T with 195 flights since August 23 of this year. I fly every day and I am on my 28 gallons of fuel this summer. I have had no problems with either engine, also what the guys at the field notice is the starting the engines, is exactly the same repetition every time. choke, engine high 6 to 8 flips, turn on ignition, 4 flips it starts, then stops. release choke put engine at idle and on the 4th flip away she goes, it is exactly the same for the 3.2, this is only when I start the first time in the mornig. the rest of the day is one flip with choke, the 3 flips at idle and she starts.
lots of power, running the 2.4 with a 20x10 and the 3.2 a 22x10 but also did it with a 24x8, but the prop went ultrasonic and was too noisy for our club, but what a sound. my 2.4 turns at 6300 rpm and the 3.2 at about the same. I use a 50 to 1 oil mix, Zemoah oil mix. I like to be conservative on the oil mixture, as I want my engines to last. The more I run these engines the better they seem to run. I am now in the near future, like this winter buying the FPE 4.2, which will go into the new Lanier Edge 540 87" wingspan.

Default RE: F.P.E Engines-What are your opinions?

I just got the 3.2 to go on Sig Sundancer biplane. On the first try yesterday, it cranked easily as adverstised once gas was up to the carb. I could see because the cowl hadn't been installed yet. The engine ran good all the way through, hi and low, and after first crank all I had to do was flip and it cranked right up. Idled great, transitioned great, whatever!

Today I cut the cowl and when I cranked the engine with the cowl on, it ran fine for a while, tached 6300+ (yesterday it tached 6700) with a 22-10 prop. Then, abruptly, it quit. Long story short, after two hours of flipping and cussing, I discovered that when I reinstalled the muffler (had to remove to fit cowl) I crimped the ignition wire under the muffler and soon as the covering burned off, I had a short. Some call it dumb thumbs. The wire was not burned in two, so I taped it up with some rubber splicing tape, started the engine and presto!!, good as new (well almost). Hopefully, tomorrow I'll fly. This is assuming that when I get up tomorrow the engine cranks with the cowl on, runs good, etc., etc, etc.

This is my first gas engine after 20 years of glow. I have one question regarding break-in. This engine calls for a mix of 50:1 but several people have told me to add extra oil for a while during break-in. The literature that came with the engine does not recommend this as they say extra oil promotes carbon deposits and could even cause rings to stick. Any opinions? By the way, everybody has one(opinion). What's yours?

Larry

When I broke my in, I ran for about 3 tank full 40 to 1 oil. then 50 to 1. I use the Zenoah OIL synthetic. Very good. I do not use the Amsoil, as I have members in the club that used it, you do get 300 to 400 more rpms, but the engines don't last. I would rather have less rpms and a longer life on the engine.
