Default ZDZ 160B2 Champion on pipes

Anyone out there with a ZDZ 160B2 Champion on the large KS tuned pipes ie the 1090s. I'd like to know how the motor responds over the full range on tuned pipes as opposed to cans/mufflers please, cheers

Works well - on 30x10- 32x11 prop - is extremely quiet in air - very smooth quick throttle up at low rpm etc..
Good prop selection for IMAC 3D seems to be in the 6000-6300 rpm band

Thank you, what sort of gain in power do the pipes achieve over the cans say JMB for example, ball park idea, like is it worth the extra effort!
cheers

About 300 400rpm typically on same 30x10 prop .
Is it worth it ?
the really short header and the big JMB cans are really easy to do and sound very mellow and quiet.
Also a lot cheaper!
The power difference is definately noticable .
We have setup the ZDZ160's in 35% "heavy" models using in cowl mufflers .
This is a great setup for planes which really don't perform on 100"size" engines
Around 35 lbs the JMBS are still a good choice - After that - if you are at 40 lbs - the pipes are the way to go.
Unlimited stuff and 3D all are fine -even here at high elevation.

Excellent, sounds like you have been where I would like to be! Is the header length reccomended by KS ideal with the 1090s
cheers

yes - about 11"-12" of header to the 1090 --play with it and see what you like best.
- not much difference

I am running the KS 1080 pipes on my 160 Champion as is a friend. Another local runs the 1080s on a DA. Dick is familiar with these setups. Perhaps these are the ones he is refering to. The 1080 is smaller, lighter and cheaper than the 1090. I don't have any tach numbers but the 1090 setups I have seen didn't seem to have any advantage over the 1080 setups. The 1080 is not any heavier than the tuned cannister KS sells for the same displacement range.

I thought Brian's were 1090's ---
I guess the 1090's were the ones I put on York's plane
I now have also -some big AMT's which really work -a bit heavier but really tune well.

I have only used one so far -on a 80 single and it worked extremely well with 80CM from export to ring on pipe - that's a header of about 12"
I was turning in 7000+range so -more length may be required-
The 160 likes running right around 6000 (as will the 80) so I will have to see what transpires on next setup - It is going into a 40% Extra-
One thing for sure-- small diameter headers are not as efficient . I am using only 30mm now
Not a big difference but noticeable.

Right , so what I'm hearing is that I can save space money and 8ozs for the same performance then, by using the 1080s?

I can't guarantee you exactly the same performance as the 1090. My casual comparisons were not that detailed. I simply wanted to point out that the 1080 is a good alternative with no obvious drawbacks and some small advantages in size, weight and money. The main advantage for me is that the 1080 fits in my plane.
