RE: 3W 80i
I like lots of power, so probably a little smaller and lighter plane than the QQ, I want to limit it to 24.5lbs RTF less fuel to be in the ballpark of the power to weight I like. I will most likely go with the full length tuned pipe. I was thinking about the romanbuilt models 260, should be 22lbs with that setup

RE: 3W 80i
Boy, that figures........new 80cc and I just bought a 3W-75 from Gerhart this summer.
I wonder if the engine will also be available in the side carb style like the 75iUS.

RE: 3W 80i
flyinrazrback check out Wild Hares new Cap.
Tom will be getting them about the end of this year.
Less than 21lbs. and about 90" W.S.
With a 80 up front it'll be a kick thats for sure.
Looks like the new 3W-80XI will almost keep up with the old ZDZ-80RV
Weight is about a half pound more, and just a little less power.
(Specs. taken from 3W web site)
3W-80 XI
Cylinder capacity: 4.76 cu.in
Power: 8.1 HP; 5,96 kW
Bore dia.: 1.97 in
Stroke: 1.57 in
Speed range: 1100-8500 rpm
Weight: 5.05 lbs incl. ignition
Crankshaft: 3 Ball bearings
Connecting rod: Needle bearings on both ends
Gasoline-Version: 1 : 50 - 1 : 80 Mix
Ignition: 6,0 V double ignition
Propeller 2-bladed / Ã* 2 pales: 26x10; 26x12; 28x10
Propeller 3-bladed / Ã* 3 pales: 22x12; 23x12; 24x10

RE: 3W 80i
flier, I dont puch much faith in specs, point being my 106 was rated for a 28x10, mine and a friends pull 29x10s and 30x10 with authorty. I am sure the 3w 80i will be no exception. Should be equal to the new zdz in power give or take 100 rpm or so IMO. It doesnt matter, mine is getting a full length tuned pipe, and if I can get 6300-6400 out of a 27x10 menz or such, I will be happy with that. On the weight issue new zdz 80 weighs 80.4oz with ignition, and the 3w weight listed includes ignition for a total weight of 80.8oz, so its only .4oz heavier than the zdz.

RE: 3W 80i
hum hum
i asked the 3W80 weight to Gerhard and it's 2380g=83.9 oz.
ZDZ80-RVJ, 2280g=80.4oz
According to 3W, the 80 turns a 3W 26 x 12 wood prop at 6,000 with
a LL size canister muffler.
They have not conducted any tests with a tuned pipe.
In most cases you pick up about 400 to 500 RPM with a tuned pipe.

RE: 3W 80i
Sounds like they may be in same ballpark-My 26x12 prop is a ZM and runs 6450 here .
So different brand props -different elevation-different exhaust setup.
Invalid comparison

RE: 3W 80i
Scoubi, I used the numbers from 3ws website. Bottom line is they are both extremely close in power and weight, and one should be picked as what you have experience in, ie ZDZ or 3W. I am happy that 3w has an answer to the new zdz, I wish the same could have been said about DA.

RE: 3W 80i
The numbers I was referring to was the weight numbers on 3ws website. Both appear to be great motors. What is sad is there a ton of people who will not try either because they only fly DA, and will wait for a motor that may never hit the street.

RE: 3W 80i
Same here RTK, I will try whatever regardless of the brand. I started out DA and had a 100. Tried a 3w 106 and liked it a lot better, stuck with the 106. Figured I would give the 110 a try and did, great motor, but liked the 106 better. I usually pick whats best for the application, not the brand. Never a customer service issue with DA, 3W or BME, and have to have service from all 3, so I dont use CS as a basis for my decision any longer since I have had no problems with any of them.

RE: 3W 80i
Personally I dont think you could go wrong with this engine on the CA models extra, would be a great combo. If you are thinking on the new zdz80 as well, dont think you can go wrong with that engine either, two excellent choices. I fly 3w myself, but would try the new zdz in a heartbeat as well. Both the same power, same weight, so boils down to what you want. Either engine will pull the snot out of your CA 31% extra. I would recommend using a cannister exhaust or pipe on either engine though, especially if you plan on using it for imac, as the stock mufflers on the zdz and 3w single cylinder engines are very loud.
