Default 3w-100 Weight, power???

I know a guy selling a 3w-100 for $600.00. The motor only has 3 gallons of fuel through it and looks brand new. .How much do they weigh compared to the 106 and the DA-100? Is the power comparible to these engines? Will it turn a 27x10 with authority?

Seems like a great deal???

does it have the brown phenolic carb block, or the black plastic one? the old 3w 100s were about 6-7oz heavier I believe, I may be off on the number, but it was a bit heavier. The 3w 100 is same power as a DA 100, the 106 a little better. I also believe the cylinders are backwards compared to the new ones, but dont quote me. Its been a while since I have had my old style 100.

Some of extra weight of the 100 comes from the crankcase wall thickness as they were not paper thin like the 106cc of today. The 100's are good engines, slightly heavier and slightly down on power compared to todays version. I would say it is a good deal since you are buying the engine from a person you know and not likely to get stuck with someones lemon.
As for the cylinders, the older ones I have seen all have "made in italy" cast in them and have a different finish than the newer. So maybe they are now sourced from somwhere else? Don't know if port timing has changed or anything like that.

This was a good engine and for 600 rasbuckniks you can't go wrong. If it has the brown phenolic carb block check this to see if it hasn't been tightened down too much. If it has, take it off and check to see if it is warped and if warped, run it over some sandpaper to grind it down flat. The reason being that it may leak air and thus not provide enough fuel draw. The spacer is, of course, necessary to keep the carb from getting too much heat from the engine and thus boiling the fuel. Anyway, make sure there is no gap betwen the spacer and the carb.
This was, as I recall, a German engine with Italian cylinders.

It does have the cylinders stamped "made in Italy". I can't remember if the carb block was brown or black, is there a problem with the brown one?
Does anyone know how much it weighs, and what prop it will turn???

The brown carb blocks can warp if got too hot or tightened too much. If no matter what you try the engine doesnt run right, this is usually the problem. The motor weighs 6.5lbs, the new 106 is 5.9lbs. Its power is on par with a DA 100, and will swing 27 and 28" props. Menz 27x10 is probably the best 3D prop depending on weight of the airplane.

The bottom ends (crankshaft, pins, rods and needle bearings) are virtually indestructable in the old 3W-100. I've got a couple of old ones with many gallons through them - no bottom end wear at all - original bearings, no leaks. The only weak point is the ignition. Sometimes they just go on the fritz. They may need plug cap replacement.

Well I bought it from him today, $500.00 with mufflers. I think I done good. It does have the brown carb block, but it seems perfect.
Now I just need the right plane.

I had one, ran like a top!! Real loud with smoke mufflers on it, turned a 28x10 3W or Mej all day. great motor!! You can use some RTV silicone on the carb block if you want to make sure there are no leaks. Had in on the Aeroworks Edge ARF, great combo! FYI the cylinders were made by Ducati for 3W.

The 3W-100i-B2 can swing a Biela 28-10 prop at 6,100 rpm, all day long. We use the same engine to drag around a plane that weighs over four times more than anything you might put it in for better than 3 hours per flight. They load up the spark plugs every 10 operational hours if you use 100LL Av gas, but with regular gas there will not be a problem. The ignition system leaves a little to be desired but you can't go wrong with the engine at any price from manufacturers listed and below. Signature line will provide enough information to relate reason for information. Can't give more than that already included.

Depends on which ignition, does yours have a blue dot on it? if so its good for 6v (regulated to 6v), make sure when you mount it to leave a gap under it so air can get through it and do not wrap it with foam, etc.

Yes, there is a blue dot on the ignition module, red dot on the sensor by the prop hub. The ignition says 4.8V.

If there is a blue dot, you can run up to 6v, but regulated at 6v even. These ignitions are ok, the ones prior to these had some issues.
