Other DA engine?
#1
Hey guys,
Just got curious about other DA Engines. I know they have the 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc all on their website.. But I believe that I've seen Chip Hydes Ultimate with a decal saying 200cc 4 cylinder? Anyone got one of these?
Also I have a couple video's of Blaine Austin flying a Hempel 50% Edge and I BELIEVE the smallest engine Bill recomends is a 240? BUT I do see a DA sticker on the cowl of the Edge... What's under the hood?
I've also heard the rumors about the DA 75... Any word on that one?
Just curious guys.

The 200 is a prototype still, only a few of them flying around that I know of. They have plans for a 75, but nothing concrete, only one prototype flying. Yes thats a DA sticker on top of Blaine's plane, but its a 3w 240. There are also rumors, and just rumors at that, of a new 100cc, 150cc as well, but I will not believe that til they hit the street. For now you can actually get the new zdz super 80 and 3w 80i single, the latest and greatest in their size.

Thanks for the info on Blaines plane...
The 200 has been a proto since 2002? I THINK Chip won the '02 TOC or Nats, somthing like that with this engine

yep, its been around since 02', I think they have had crankshaft problems on them, and thats the hold up. I would have rather seen a 200 twin and not a 4 banger. I am happy with my 3ws, but if DA comes out with a light 150 or 200, I would consider trying it.

The DA200 can't swing large props. Frazier Briggs practices at my field (The Moon) every year before the Shootout and this year I just watched to pick up any pointers I could. Anyway, he runs a Mejzlik 32x10 on it with plain mufflers (4 of them to be exact). A 3W157 on 1090's will perform every bit as well as the DA200 and at less weight and have GREAT midrange. Of course you would probably want to run a larger prop than a 32x10.
Chips DA200 ran a Menz 30x12 at the 2002 TOC so you can see the DA200 can't be loaded hard or else 'BANG'.

Thanks Plane Insane..
I'm not looking to buy any of these engines (well the 50 right now) but I'm just curious. Pictures and video's would be cool!

Ice Man, I didn't even take a camera to the field mainly because I just wanted to study his snap rolls and 45 lines. Frazier and Mike Briggs are two of the nicest fellas you could ever meet. They never stop smiling and joking around. Here's a shot of Chip's 200. Notice the turned down fins. Looks strange. I asked Mike about that and he said its strictly a weight reduction modification.

The 157 on cans will out pull it, I had a 150 on 1090s that showed better numbers than the 200, I will have my 157 on full pipes going this weekend. Now if that 200 from DA weighed what a 150 did, I would be game.

The pilots won the events, not the engine. If it was the other way around, how bout QQ? won a bunch with 3W, and not this time with DA. Its the guy at the sticks period. I would bet good money you set up 2 identical planes, one with DA, one with 3W, and the best skilled pilot would win with either.
PS Kiwi. how did Hemples 3W 157 run?

Must be a different plane...The plane I am referring to was sold by Frazer years ago to a friend in Phoenix after the TOC...My longtime best friend Duke Crow in Kingman, AZ, bought it from him...He sold it to a young flyer in Kingman, with the original 120 engine still in it..The new owner replaced the 120 with a 3W 150...It's been repainted and a smoke system added..It's in Kingman as of 8 AM this morning...
The lettering on the side said "Dessert Aircraft"...Dave Johnson was still the importer of 3W at the time...
There was no Cactus Aviation, Bobby Wilson was working for Dave..

Ahh, then the plane I'm referring to is another one Frazier sold after a TOC. It looks just like the one he's flying now and a fella named Parrish Lewin purchased it. It originally had a DA150 in it but was underpowered.
