Ebay G62's, new, deal or not?
Noticed an ad on eBay for G620PU's, item no. 6016035700, for $249. Says prop hub available from Horizon. Horizon's part says 'Not yet available' but price is $75.00. Don't know what type of mount is required, or cost. I feel many times like you get taken on eBay purchases. What's the consensus on this-deal or not? Bill S.

It's for real..I bought one last time for $339...The seller bought a whole bunch directly from Zenoah in Japan...the mount is the stock steel plate, it's in the box....$75 is a ridiculous price for a hub, but that's the way Horizon works..
If I had more money I would buy the whole lot, making a hub is no problem...
If someone buys one of these my conversion price is $175, I will make a new hub...

This one costs $263, whereas you can buy a brand new G62 from ChiefAircraft for $385. If you can complete the engine for much less than $120, then it is a good deal. The main differences are:
1. Carb adapter. You can use as is and rig up a throttle linkage, or buy a twsiter version, or the thin adapter from B&B for $16
2. Mount. You may not even need one, depending on the installation. B&B sells a cup mount for $24
3. Prop hub, washer and bolt. This is the toughie. Horizon list the hub alone for $60. You can buy them elsewhere for less though.
4. Muffler. The new G62 comes with a much improved large-volume inverted muffler. This ones still has the old style can.
Unless you can machine the parts yourself or just happen to have them around, it isn't as sweet a deal as you might think.

Have to offer that that is a very sweet deal, there are plenty of guys on the RCU that could make a hub for a case of beer including myself.

Hey, I just bought 4 last night to make into 4 lb electronic advance G62s...I make my own parts...Carb rotator blocks from 3/8 G10, mounts from 4" 6061, ignitions with syncro spark, hubs from 2024...They will be for sale in a few weeks..Might be a little less than 4 lbs, I have an idea for an even lighter hub....

G10 is epxoy board, same stuff some circuit boards are made from...It's great material, can be machined just like aluminum...It's highly abrasive to cutting tools and will burn up high speed steel quickly, so it's best machined with carbide tools...Comes in almost any shape and thickness...The 3/8 thickness I use is $40 for a square foot (shipped) in 2x4 foot sizes..

Ralph - Noticed that you used 2024 instead of 6061 aluminum for prop hub. Is this a better material for hub or will 6061 be just as good?

2024 is way stronger for parts that will be threaded...I use 6061 for the part that goes on the taper and is held on with a nut, and 2024 for the top part that gets the prop bolt...6061 strips easier....6061 is fine for almost everything else....7075 is the best, but most expensive, and overkill.....

Does anyone have a source for the prop adapter for the G-62 other than Horizon? I would like to buy one of these engines, but I'm looking to save money on the prop adapter. (Horizon's $75 seems really expensive to me).

He who hesitates is lost...They're probably gone by now...Should have gotten one, even with a $75 hub it would have been cheaper than anywhere else by $100...Read the thread above, C&H will make a hub....

I purchased one of these. I was wondering what are the negative implications of using G-10 instead of aluminum sheet for a sheet rear mount?

There are no negatives....The G10 will cost more than the aluminum...I have thrown away probably 1000 of the stock steel plates, still have some..You can have one for postage

Thanks for the fast reply and kind offer! I think the steel plate is supposed to be in the box that comes with the engine. I've got some of the G-10 around here, but not any sheet aluminum over 1/8" thick. I use the G-10 to make the carb-twister mounts, and have what will likely be a lifetime supply at 1.5" square per new engine. Once I have my plane kit in hand, I'll work up how long I need my prop hub to be.
Do you see any problem with removing the rear of the crankshaft that comes out the back of the engine? I realize it may impact the resale value of the engine, but I don't often sell a gasser. I don't like spring starters that much.

No problem with removing the rear crank, a Makita 4" disc grinder does it easily...
I have 4 of the Ebay G62s, no plate with any of them...Must be something Horizon gets with theirs, along with the prop hubs...The Ebay engines came directly from Komatsu and were intended for something else, hence no airplane prop hubs...And $75 for a hub, and over $20 for 2 bolts and a washer is ridiculous....

The stock steel backplate is heavy. You'd be better off making one from aluminum plate.
I cut off the rear shaft on all my gassers. I used to think since the G62 shaft is symmetrical, I might be able to reverse it if the "front" shaft is bent. Then Ralph said more than likely the whole shaft would be screwed up if it gets bent, so off went the G62 rear too. It is particularly beefy compared to some others - easily worth 2 Oz. or so.

If the shaft is twisted, like it almost always is, turning it around helps nothing...A bent shaft can be straightened and the twist taken out, so you need only 1 end...
