I am considering going gas, because I hate the residue left behind from glow. My queswtion is this. Does a gas engine leave any residue on the plane? If so, how much less or more than glow? Does it clean easier than glow? Does it tend to loosen covering like glow? Is this effect more or less than glow? HELP!!
Thank you for any help. Bob

Bob.. Gas usually leave a residue during break in when the oil:gas ratio is at it's highest and when parts are getting seated. After the initial break in period, a gas engine usually won't leave much residue, if any.

If the engine is new... The first few tankfuls will leave some residue in the form of small black spots...I believe this is due to the wear and seating of the internal parts.. As the engine breaks in, they will gradually disappear... I run 40:1 synthetic oil, and there is no cleaning after flying......In a short time, you will be wondering why you waited so long...cheaper fuel, super reliable idle, no worry about tank placement, etc......

Small black spots may be quite an understatement. Black yuck, that can hardly be removed without using a gas-drenched rag is more like it.
But like a young puppy that ruins your house, when it grows up to be a nice dog, all is forgotten.

OK then, run a search on black goo here and find out.
Once the engine is run in, it almost disappears, much depending on the oil used. Many sysnthetic racing oils wil show a complete combustion, so the oil that remains in the gas mixture never makes it down into the exhaust, no matter what the mix ratio.
My mix recommendation is 3% oil as best overall mix. When the engine is run in well, there is very little exhaust residue. I clean my plane about every 10th flight. (stab mostly)
