Props for BME 50...

My engine is starting to "come in", so its time for more prop, I believe. Right now I'm flying a BME 21x8 on an H9 Extra 260, but will get a GP Patty Extra before the year is out.
I want to slow the airplane down a little at given throttle settings. I'm told that a 22x8 is about the best overall size for this engine. The BME wood props are fine, but I'd like to get one of those red and white (painted?) props I see on some guys' models. Cannot remember who makes those.
Not really interested in paying $50+ for a composite prop. I realize one might be a bit more efficient, but I mainly sport fly with a bit of IMAC thrown in.
So, any suggestions would be appreciated.

the white/red props are biela, and a 22x8 is around $55. I do not like the performance of these props, as they load up the motor more than others, and the BME 50 likes to turn up rpms for best performance. My BME 50 performed best on a Menz 22x8 wood prop. If I had one today, I would run a PT Models 22x8, available from troybuilt models.

I agree with Flynrazrback on the Menz 22/8. I also suggest the NX 22/8, & the 3W 22/8 until you hit about 7400 rpm. Then switch to a BME 22/8 or the MSC 22/8 at about 7000- 7100 rpm.. Imho, these all pull good, & are great for IMAC & freestyle type flying. Good luck, neighbor. BTW, Steve, are you going to the Shreveport Big Bird Fly-in on Sept 9 & 10?

Thanks. Now I'm told a 23x8 would do fine, and slow the airplane down as well.
Guess I'd better call Don's Hobby tomorrow, since he apparently is now handling all problems/questions. Rumor is Keith was spending too much time on the phone and couldn't get any work done. I know it took TWO weeks for me to finally get in touch with him...[&o]

Isn't that big bird fly-in an IMAA event? I go out of my way to avoid any sort of IMAA deal; sorry.

I wouldnt go with a 23x8, the BME is not as strong as the DA 50 and is better suited for the 22x8 IMO, the 23x8 would lug it down too much IMO. Tork, I plan on being at the Shreveport Big Bird again this year, see you there!

The Shreveport Big Bird is not an IMAA event. I look forward to seeing y'all there.

Nope. I was tentatively planning on making the IMAC meet there in August, but that got shot down thanks to our retarded governess and her big plans to stem the "crime wave" in New Orleans...

After another 3 or 4 gal you'll be at about 7400rpm. These Sachs type engines really run best between 7200-7400 rpm on the ground. I'm not knocking 7100, that's good too, but they definitely need to be propped above 7000.

My BME 50 is happy spinning a 3W 22x8 at 7100, but I only have one gallon through it so far.

Hi;
I have had my BME 50 for many years and now have it on the 29% Airwild Extra 260. I am using a 22X8 Mejlik and get about 7140. The power/weight combination is fine. I have unlimited vertical and she slows nicely. I tried a 22X10 Mejlik but lost about 300rpms and some vertical. It will turn a 22X8 Pro Zinger at 7400+ but it is not as quiet and frankley I don't need the added power. It doesn't like the 23X8s I have tried.

Steve I'm running an NX 22x8 on the Taurus with really good results. That prop (the NX brand) gets very favorable reviews around here and so far I really like the performance. Although I must admit it's the only prop I've tried to date, and it was the one recommended by Bill at Taurus.
