RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
Looking good, its moving along nicely. Been too hot to fly here, so I got bored and added some flames to mine. At least it will stand out from the other 2 stiks at our field.

What size plane is it? (span) I got a G38 that needs a home. What prop do you use and could you tell me how the plane performs with the G38? Thanks Capt,n

This is the Great Planes Giant Big Stik ARF, 80.5" wingspan. The G38 with a Zinger 18x10 will take this plane off and also hover at half throttle. The other 2 Stik's at our field each have 25cc engines, so I had to be a little different.

Solo, How did the ballance work out with that engine? Is it stock or has it been lightened?
Thanks Bob
Oops, I just looked back at the pic. I see its stock.

RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
Thanks Solo. I think I see one of those planes in my future, and after going gas on my extra, there's no way I'm going back to the mess of glow. I have the SIG Extra 300XS with a BCMA SPE40 on it and it balances right at 30% MAC. When I build (put together) a plane, I tey to use no added weight, but a little is ok.
Thanks Bob

Bob: How many flights do you have on the Sig Extra with the SPE 40 on it? Sounds like a great combo. What can you tell me about it? Thanks Capt,n

I didnt want to add weight, but I really wanted to get this thing in the air and conditions for the next day were loking perfect. In reality, I will probably relocate one of the batteries to shift the weight forward so I can take out the lead. I'll always keep a couple glow planes around just for the simplicity of putting it in the truch and getting a few quick flights in, but i'll never be without a gasser. This wintoer i'll build either an Extra 260 27% or a 29% Katana.
Mr Smith, send those pics to [email protected] and i'll post them for you.

RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
I'm working on my Giant Stick today it's almost ready. Throttle has me stumped, G-26.
I made the decision to convert all I can to Gas or electric, I'm tired of the glow mess. Next project is the 81 in GP's Cub, making it electric, then a 40 size Stick.

RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
I have 8 flights on the Sig now. Just finished it up about three weeks ago. Weight as I have it set-up is 12# 8oz, and the SPE40 is putting out 18 1/2#, on a ProZinger 20X8. Plan to go to a Xoar 21X8, should put it just over 20#. As set-up it balanced at 30% MAC, with no added weight, and handles great at that CG. On low rate it handles very crisp but not snappy. I have not tried high rate, being my first plane after a trainer, but my buddy has and says it's right there, right now. Right now it will hover at a little less than 2/3 throttle, but the new prop should cut that down to half. I used S9252 servos for ailerons and elevators, a S9151 for rudder, and S3151 on throttle and ignition switch. (ignition can be switched manually or with the TX)

Well everthing was going well untill I tried to CG it. Now I am going to have to move a lot of stuff I can't believe how far it was off. I had a cresent wrench, 3 screw drivers and a batteriy up front to get it to balance HOLY CRAP!!!!! Any way I ran the motor this morning ran great but I think my prop need some balancing. Heres some pics. Need some advice on CG from other builders.

RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
Sirex sorry for my eariler post. Did not mean to go off topic, but the man asked, so I answered. Thats a beautiful plane you have there. Those SPE40 engines are sweet. I really like mine I would go with a different prop though. I have found the best static thrust on the 21X8 Xoar. I have tried ProZinger 20X8, Mens Ultra 20X10, and the Xoar. As far as balance goes try moving the ballast as far from CG as possible. The further from CG the less you will need. You have probably already heard of these, but incase you have not here is a link.

RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
I know a fellow that says his CG is at 7 inches from the LE of the wing. Says it is still stable but snappy. I'll have to check mine. Kids, don't try this at home as YMMV. Brian

RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
Thanks
I have not seen those spinner weights. But I think I am going to need more than 2oz. I am going to start a thread to see what the most weight someone has added to a plane for CG might be interesting. I hate to put the batteries so close together do to RFI. Oh well will see what happens. Kind of disapointed right now I had an RFI issue that cost me a lot of money if you know what I mean.
Adam reccomended an 18x10 for this plane because of clearance issues. I have a XOAR 18x10 on order hope it will work.
Thanks
Shayne

RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
The original CG was 7" from the leading edge, my manual had an addendum that corrected the CG at 5 7/8" back.
Sirex, I am at a loss on suggestions. I weighed an 8" Crescent wrench at work and it was right at 10 ounces. All I can add is the obvious, move everything forward as much as you can.
The Stik looks great.

Sirex I believe the spinner weights are available up to 5oz from other manufactures. I know Dubro has them up to 3oz. You could aslo extend the engine further foward.

RE: Giant Big Stick and BCMA SPE 40 Build
I moved the ignition battery up as far as I can along with switch and regulator. I called C&H Ignitions and I have to keep the receiver battery and regulator and switch at least 12 inches away. So everything is where it has to be. I live in BFE it will be a week to get any stand offs. So do I add ruffly a pound of wieght or not? The motor will handle it it is a 40cc. Man this sucks!!
ok the g38 weights 71 ounces and the BCMA SPE 40 weighs 51 ounces that is a 20 ounce difference.
Solo you said you had to add 3 ounces that would leave 23 ounces of weight that I missing from my plane compared to yours.
Am I reaching ????????????
What do you think??
