Default 3W 24 gas engine thrust

Does any one know how much thrust this engine should have. I have a Pro Zinger 18-6 wood prop on it. With my digital fish scales I'm only getting 12 pounds 8 ounces. Is this about right or should it have more. Engine has about 4 gallons of fuel threw it . I'm wanting to 3D with plane.

Zinger props are best used as paint stirrers. Zinger Pro prop are for emergencies only. Get an apc18x6, or other quality prop (Mejzlik, MenzS, NX, etc.) and then see what you get. You won't get much more with that engine, I think the limit for a 3D plane with that engine is around 11 lbs.

I don't know about the actual thrust numbers, but I know for an absolute fact that a 3w-24 can haul a 39 pound, 10' span plane all over the country at 60 plus knots with a plastic 16" prop.

You are using a prop which is too small for that engine. 3W-24s shine with a 18 x 8 for most rc applications. In sleek aircraft, an 18 x 10 is perferred. You should get around 8000 rpms with an 18 x 8 with the pitts muffler.

If your plane is 12 lbs or less, that engine should give unlimited vertical. I found the best prop for the engine was actually the Master airscrew classic 18 x 8. I tested a bunch of them when I used that engine on research planes. At one pt, I had 18 of them and it is a great engine.

Doesn't the MA Classic prop flex and flatten out at high rpm, thus reducing its pitch?

Elson,

The prop used was selected to attain optimum performance in the execution of performing specific goals. That was a bit vauge but I think you understand. The illustration was provided to show the ability of that little engine.

Thanks guys for the info. Also whats the best oil ratio for this engine. I'm using 50:1 synthetic zenoah 2 cycle oil.

Leave it right where you're at. The ratio is just about perfect. Switch to Belray same ratio when you get the opportunity. The reasons go along with the post on what that little engine can do. It fails to note for how long, but suffice to say I don't think you're going to fly as many hours in your lifetime.

Pat,

My "too small prop comments" were focused on the 18 x 6 Zinger. I am sure I can guess the pitch of the 16" prop. No need to.

Oil mix:

I ran my engines on 50:1 syn oil with no problems and all of the run time was WOT on 30 lb airplanes pulling draggy samplers.

How does the 3W-24 rate power wise, say compaired to a Zenoah 26? Picked one up on at a flea market and just want to know if they are worth having.?

The Zenoah is a lot easier to work with the carb. The 3w has a lot of power for it's size. Both are good choices.
