Default Which oil is best?

As I've said before I'm new to gas. I've got a Fuji BT 50EI, the guy I bought it from already broke it in. He's trustworthy by all accounts, so yeah it's done right. He said he used Klotz 2 cycle RC gas model lube(@40:1). Now I doubt that I want to run to the local hardware store and buy the first two cycle oil I see, but whats acceptable and whats not, and how do you decide what to use? Also is switching oil types smart at this point? I just don't want to ruin the motor before I have a chance to drill it into the ground.

Default RE: Which oil is best?

This is a question that will get a lot of wars started. Here is what I do

On a new engine I run Lawnboy ashless at 32:1 for how many gallons the manufacturer says

After breakin I switch to Penzoil Premium Air Cooled at 50:1

I've done this on DA, Fuji, Brison and 3W engines and all have just been put back into service after the bi-yearly checkup I do and only one of my DA50's has a slight bit of carbon on the top of the piston and that is after 15+ gallons. All others are just off breakin mix up to 10 gallons and clean as a whistle

I buy mine here in MD at the local advance auto, they carry the 8oz bottles for 1.98

Ace hardware also has it for 2.39 for the same bottle.

If you fly alot and want a gallon or better, the internet is the cheapest way to go.

I could not find any Penz, at the local stores, so I ordered some pints from aircraft spruce and specialty. I don't fly enough to warrant buying a case of pints, but if I did, you can get it pretty reasonably on the internet. I also just bought a gallon of Husqvarna chainsaw oil, cost $23 including shipping. I'm going to use the Penz for break in and the Husky for running after that.

There are a lot of excellent two stroke oils out there. Belray MC-1, Mobil, the Pennzoil already noted, Motul 800, Redline 2 stroke racing oil, and many others. I've found that I prefer the mixed odor of the Redline and the Motul for my stuff at home at a 75-1 mix. For the stuff I run for many continous hours at a time for work we have excellent results with Belray MC-1 at 50-1. Pick the one you like and run with it.

We used to run Belray MC-1 at 40-1 in the dirt bikes. We were leary 10 years plus years ago about going to lean with the mix. We did alot of tight woods riding that was also pretty hard on them. Used to love the smell of the Belray.

To my knowledge it is not synthetic, but at 32:1 it sure keeps your engine clean and shinny on the inside. Deposits are almost non existent. It was recommended to me by an engine manufacturer for use after break in and for break in at the same ratio. The deposits on the plane aren't bad either.
Any of the above mentioned high quality oils will work fine at the recommended manufacturer mixing ratios.

The big difference between Amsoil and Pennzoil is the texture and color of the carbon. Pennzoil carbon is soft, black and easy to remove. Amsoil carbon is brown, hard and hard to remove.

Josey

Lean out the Belray mix some. I just tore down what for us is a low time engine at just under 100 hours. The amount of oil residue in the cylinder tell me that the Belray can go to a thinner mix for the r/c stuff. I think RTK can verify that at 50-1 there's ample evidence that the plugs can burn pretty darn clean, but our r/c stuff will not be adjusted to such critical levels. 60 or 65-1 should be just fine. Send me your e-mail again and we'll talk mor about that.

I break in my engines at 32:1 Pennzoil and run them 50:1 after break in. I tried a synthetic, about 3 gal at 80:1, but after some thought I went back to my Pennzoil. I don't care about any price differences but all my 2 strokes have been running for years on it so to me it has proven itself. Don't know if it's the "worlds best" but I'm happy with it and I have peace of mind with it especially after reading some positive threads about it by RCBugman and some others. It can be found at auto parts stores and several other outlets all over the country. I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference if I were to choose engine lable "A" or engine lable "B". I am by far not an expert on the subect but like had been mentioned several times over...... the engine will more than likely be damaged from meeting mother earth than the oil damaging the engine..... I agree with SS. Josey, you might also want to lean your needles a tad if you are fouling your plugs at 50:1.

That and an improperly tuned and set-up engine. I do not know of any "quality" oils that would not fit our use.

Captain, I agree.

From what I've seen, the better oils can all be run somewhere from 50 to 80-1. Depends a whole lot on how well the engine is cooled, the mixture is set, and how the engine is used or "loaded". 50-1 should be plenty safe for any of them and leaves a tremendous amount of oil on the machinery for you to see in a tear down. For someone that pays attention to their engine tuning and prop sizes, along with baffleing a twin the way it should be, then 70-80 to one works pretty good.

Don't get your hopes up, the product info sheet on the Pennzoil website says it's blue. Not to bust any bubbles, just don't want ya to be disappointed!
