DA- 50-R & Tuned Pipe
I'm getting a DA-50-R and I want to run a tuned pipe. I'm no expert on tuned pipes on Aircraft Gas Engines. I would appreciate some info on tuned pipes for this engine. Gotta be a host of info out there. I tried searcing for it. Didnt come up with much. Thought I'd ask you Guys. Any info would be appreciated. Robt.

RE: DA- 50-R & Tuned Pipe
As far as I know there is only one tuned pipe for the DA-50 -- the KS 1060. I have this pipe on my DA-50. The only variable is the header needed for your installation. Other than getting the right drop on the header my installation was very easy and so far I am very happy with mine.
I know this isn't much info, but honestly it's not that complicated...

RE: DA- 50-R & Tuned Pipe
Thanks for the info. I saw the KS on the DA website. Didnt know the model to look into. If you got the 1060 and its working good then that must be the one. I just need some info on installing and setting it up. I guess it will come with directions and all but I remember the tuned pipes on Go Cart Engines could be fiddled with and length from the exhaust port and such could be messed with to get the best tuning. I just wondered if the same thing applied to the Aircraft Gas Engines. I saw the Pattern Planes with them They must mess with them to get the best outta them. Anyway thanks. Robt.

That's correct, the 1060 is the one you want. Since you are in PA, get the engine/header/pipe from Troy Built models in Florida, the shipping will be cheaper and you'll get it faster. If you already have the engine and header then get the pipe from Aircraft international. You can pay ground shipping and get it in a day or two since he is right over the PA - NJ border just east of allentown

The thing with a tuned pipe is you may have to cut some of the length off the end of the header. You'll know when you go to tune the engine and you just cannot seem to get the mid-range smoothed out. Typically the wrap-around header will need about 1/2 inch cut off. The normal angled header is usually pretty close.
Typically you can expect anywhere from a 500rpm increase to 700rpm increase with the tuned pipe and it's nice and quiet. Balancing can be a problem since most of the pipes weight will be pretty far behind the CG point on most every plane. Normally you can just stuff all the batteries in the nose. Again this all depends on the plane

There you go. Thanks Bubba. Gotta think about the CG and the weight. Anything else you can think of let me know. Thanks Robt.

Don't forget the ES Composite carbon fiber pipe, works great with the DA. It is a bit more expensive, but it saves about 5oz as well. Its a viable option for the 50.

The RPM gain will definitely outweigh the weight penalty. What plane are we talking about? Maybe someone has already done it on the same plane

bubbagates, the es page is quite dated, you want the 50g pipe. It is $250. He can set the internal baffle to 16.5" or 18.5". I recommend the 18.5" baffle as it allows you to use a 12" header and go from there. If you use the 16.5" baffled pipe, you have to start with a 14" header, and those can be hard to find. We are running one on a DA 50 here, and picked up 400 rpms with a Vess 23A. Plus, it is super quiet, and runs very cool. Midrange is very good, could probably squeeze more power out of it, but it is good where it is at now.

Bubba, sorry I couldnt reply sooner ( work gets in the way!) I'm getting the Areo-Works Extra 260 85" , DA50R KS1060 Tuned pipe (Ya convinced me). If you know any info on it, let me know. Robt.

RE: DA- 50-R & Tuned Pipe
My first Aerworks 50cc Yak had the DA50/1060 combo on it and even though it was just over 18lbs it sure did not act like it. It flew very lite and had great vertical. That one trashed itself when the covering lifted on the right wing so I got a new one and this one is 19lbs using a 3W55i on the same 1060 and once again, it flies very lite with great vertical.
In fact I felt guilty about not flying it lately (been flying my 33% WH Edge and my Comp-Arf 2.3M Extra) so I actually just tossed it in the truck for tomorrow
Here's the Yak, If you look closely you can see the exit for the exhaust back behind the canopy, underneath the plane

This is my reply back on the pipe:
tks again 4 the heads up i had no idea about those baffles
This is my reply back on the pipe:
The first baffle at 17.5" is standard now (16.5" if you want to run smaller prop at higher RPMs, 18.5" if you want to run larger prop at lower RPMs). So, we'll set your pipe at 18.5". The pipe will be ready to ship by next Monday.

Cool deal, we found that with the 12" header and baffle at 18.5", the Vess 23A is a perfect match, and is more load than the smaller props hence running the 18.5" baffle.

Bubba, Great Pics, nice plane. Do you know the length of the Stinger on the KS 1060 curved. Just wondering if this works out on the Areo works I'm starting to wonder if I could use it in my TF mustang with a DA 50 See how my mind works Hehe. Robt.
