Is there any information on how to build a nitro engine dyno or has anyone built something similar for testing engine mods?

I built one years ago. I used a pair of pillow blocks and a .625 shaft with a flat plate welded at one end. A one foot long arm clamped to the shaft connected to a spring scale measured torque. If I were to make one for larger engines I would use heavier materials and make the mounting plate very heavy to dampen power impulses. You will have to do some math to figure horsepower.

I have one like mentioned by Jezmo. It cost $129, it's very well made, but you have to assemble it. I bought mine, then got divorced, so it's still in the box. I'll sell it for $50. The way it works is it mesures the torque the engine produces at a given rpm, that gives you the HP. If you want one like you see on TV, I don't know if anyone makes one, but if they do plan on spending thousands.

jet182, you need to be a bit more precise in what you are looking for. Just saying "dyno" is too wide open. How sophisticated do you want it and what are your expectations for it?
