I haven't owned a BME 50, however I did have a BME 44 and I have also owned a Brison 3.2. The Brison 3.2 shakes harder than my BME 44 did and I'm told the BME 50 is smoother than the 44.
I also believe the Brison 3.2 is quiet a bit heavier that the BME 50, but I don't know that for a fact.
For a power comparison, you'd have to talk to someone who has run the BME 50. As I recall, the Brison 3.2 is quite a stump puller, but it's been too long ago for me to quote figures.
I'd lean toward the BME 50 myself. I've also heard good things about the 3W 50.

I haven't seen a BME 50, but I have seen the Brison 3.2 and the ZDZ-40 and the ZDZ-60 in the 29% Edge. All will have plenty of power. The ZDZ-40 is probably the smoothest and lightest. It's good that BME says the 50 is smoother than the 44. The 44 was not known for smoothness. Only you can decide if you choose the engine based on what will fly the plane best, or bragging rights.

Hi Wayne,
Where would a discussion about this size engine be without me throwing in my vote for the Taurus. All I'll say here is that you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't consider the Taurus as an option in this size range. Read the thread "Tauras engine prices" in this forum for a lot of useful (and some not so useful) information on Taurus'.
If you're stuck on only considering the BME and Brison, my vote would be for the BME for three reasons: smoothness, electronic auto-advance ignition, and weight. It is right about 4 oz lighter than the Brison with mount, pitts-style muffler and ignition.

Hi Wayne,
It's www.taurus-engines.net. It's weak on current info, but they're in the process of re-vamping it. If you have any questions beyond the site, e-mail or call them. One guy in another thread said he e-mailed them on Saturday and got a response on Sunday.
BTW, I just thought of one more advantage of the BME(and also applies to Taurus) over Brison, they're available.

OK here comes some data. The guy with the Brison 3.2 in the Edge gets 7200 rpm with a Mejzlik 22x10 standard prop with an in-cowl can muffler. At whatever elevation we are at in Chicago (not much), temps between 70-80F.
The guy with the ZDZ-40 in his Edge gets 7600 rpm with a Mejzlik 20x10 prop, B&B can muffler, same conditions as above. My tach in both cases.

>>Please stick to the thread.
Wow finnz, was that aimed at my post. In case you haven't been involved in online forums for very long, all threads tend to morf over time. They rarely stick strickly to the subject. My post didn't seem to offend the person that started the thread. It's not like I asked what his favorite color was, or if he wanted to come over to dinner.
You know it is possible that Wayne hasn't heard of Taurus', and that was the purpose of my post. I know when I was researching an engine for my DP Extra I had never heard of the Taurus line and was thrilled when another user told me about them. It never occured to me to scold him for informing me.
I doubt very much that anyone wants people taking on the role of vigilanty gestapo deciding what posts are relevant or not for a particular thread. I lot of good data would be lost. Often the turns a thread takes generate very useful data.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone else with my post taking the thread "off subject".
Here's some more off topic data, so finnz don't read this:
From mglavin:
Taurus 3.2 - TS-52
Menz S 22/10 - 7000
Mejzlik 22X10 - 7200
Mejzlik 22/8 - 7900
